Chapter 13 - The Passenger in Compartment Nine

The emergency brake did not work.

Neither did the radios.

The train continued through the tunnel while Clara, Julian, Sebastian, and Sienna searched the adjoining cars. Every passenger appeared asleep. Not naturally asleep, Sienna realized, but sedated through the ventilation system.

Compartment Nine was locked.

Clara inserted the brass key from Miriam’s basement.

The door opened.

Cole sat inside, bound to a chair with a wire around his throat. A pressure device beneath the seat connected to the window. If he stood, the glass would shatter and trigger an explosive charge fixed outside the carriage.

Across from him sat Anna Voss.

She was in her late sixties, with cropped gray hair and the steady hands of a surgeon. She held no visible weapon.

“You took your time,” Anna said.

Sienna stepped forward. “You implanted the poison in Julian.”

“Yes.”

Julian’s face hardened. “Why?”

“To force the brothers into the same investigation.”

“You nearly killed me.”

“I calculated the dose.”

“You calculated wrong.”

“No. Someone activated the implant early.”

“Who?”

Anna looked at Clara.

“Miriam.”

Clara felt the accusation like a slap.

“You are lying.”

“I taught her how the implant worked.”

“Why would she poison Julian?”

“To prevent him from reaching the succession chamber before you.”

Julian turned toward Clara. “She knew I had the ring.”

Anna nodded. “Miriam never trusted a Vale, even after she learned you were biologically an Armitage.”

Cole spoke carefully through the tightening wire.

“Release the device.”

“When the train leaves the tunnel.”

“Where are you taking us?”

“To the first clinic.”

Sienna’s expression changed. “Site Nine.”

Anna smiled faintly. “The farmhouse was only the entrance.”

Clara held up the photograph left on Cole’s seat.

“What does this mean?”

Anna’s gaze moved to the three young boys in the image.

“On the night Evelyn’s twins were transferred, three infants were placed in the Vale nursery. Julian. Sebastian. And Eleanor’s surviving son.”

“Cole,” Sebastian said.

“No.”

The word came from Julian.

He studied the photograph closely.

The third child wore a hospital bracelet partly visible beneath his blanket. A letter had been written on it.

W.

“Wren?” Clara asked.

“Wren’s son,” Anna said. “A child born through the same donor program.”

Cole’s eyes narrowed. “Who am I?”

“You were never in that nursery. Your records were inserted later.”

“Why?”

“Because Wren needed a false third candidate to distract from the real one.”

“Who is the real Vale heir?”

Anna looked at Sienna.

Sienna’s face went white.

“No.”

“Samuel Voss was not your father,” Anna said. “Eleanor’s surviving infant was given to him to raise. You are Eleanor Vale’s daughter.”

Sienna backed into the wall.

Clara remembered the DNA report showing Evelyn as Sienna’s mother.

“It said Evelyn was her biological mother.”

“The report was altered.”

“By whom?”

“Mara Quinn. She needed Sienna accepted into the succession group.”

The train emerged from the tunnel.

The pressure device beneath Cole’s chair unlocked with a metallic click.

Sebastian cut his restraints.

Anna made no attempt to escape.

Outside the window, the train had stopped at a private platform beneath a snow-covered mountain. A sign marked the station with the same symbol.

Site Nine.

Miriam waited on the platform.

Clara could not move.

Miriam looked older, thinner, and entirely alive.

For one impossible moment, Clara was twelve again, standing in a doorway after a nightmare.

Then anger returned.

“You let me bury you.”

Miriam’s eyes filled with tears. “I know.”

“You let me grieve for six years.”

“I watched from a distance.”

“That makes it worse.”

Miriam accepted the words without defending herself.

“I thought distance would keep you outside the archive.”

“Everyone keeps calling lies protection.”

Clara walked past her.

The clinic lay inside the mountain.

Rows of abandoned hospital rooms stretched beneath white lights. Rusted cribs remained behind glass partitions. Cabinets held decades of birth bracelets, each matched to a new identity.

Thousands of lives.

At the end of the corridor stood a round steel door.

The succession chamber.

Miriam held out her hand.

“Clara, do not open it.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“Because Anna forced the train route. She believes the chamber can restore every original identity.”

“And you?”

“I believe opening it will erase the identities people have lived with for decades. Marriages, citizenship, inheritance, parentage. The truth could free thousands and destroy thousands more.”

Anna stepped toward the door.

“Truth does not become wrong because it is painful.”

“No,” Miriam said. “But power over truth becomes dangerous in anyone’s hands.”

The chamber activated.

A screen displayed five names.

Clara.

Julian.

Sebastian.

Sienna.

Adrian Cole.

Then a sixth name appeared.

Miriam Hart.

Miriam stared at it in horror.

“I was never a candidate.”

A voice came through hidden speakers.

Charles Wren.

“Every witness becomes a custodian eventually.”

The mountain doors sealed behind them.

On the screen, a new countdown began.
