Chapter 8 - The Sister No One Was Allowed to Remember

Lydia was waiting in a church two blocks from the annex when Emma showed her the photograph.
For the first time since appearing at Ruth's door, Lydia lost control of her expression.
"Where did you get this?"
"Ruth's building. They carried out a body wearing your ring."
Lydia touched her bare finger.
"I lost that ring twenty-nine years ago."
Emma placed the E-16 card on the pew between them.
"Who was Emma before me?"
Lydia closed her eyes.
Ruth stood at the end of the pew, watching both women. "Tell her now."
"I had a daughter before you," Lydia said.
The church seemed to become very quiet.
Emma heard distant traffic, a candle wick popping, the soft groan of old wood beneath someone's footsteps.
"What was her name?"
"Evelyn Mara Sterling. We called her Emmy."
"Emma."
"Your legal name is Emma Vale. The similarity was your father's choice, not mine."
Emma's stomach tightened. "What happened to her?"
Lydia looked toward the altar. "She was taken from a hospital nursery when she was eight months old. Gabriel said a rival family had kidnapped her. He spent years searching. Or pretending to search."
"You believed she was dead."
"I believed no child could survive the people who took her."
Ruth sat beside them. "Later we learned the kidnapping had been staged."
Emma looked from one woman to the other. "By my father?"
"By the Orchard," Lydia said. "The early program studied inheritance, attachment, and obedience. Children connected to powerful families were raised under controlled identities. Some were returned. Some were placed beside targets."
"Like Julian."
"Julian was recruited as an adult. Emmy was raised inside it."
Emma stared at the black card marked E-16. "And she has my fingerprint."
"She may have access to your medical records, copied biometric templates, and every document Gabriel collected during your life."
"Does she look like me?"
Lydia's silence was answer enough.
Ruth opened her tablet and searched the files copied from Julian's recorder. One encrypted video resisted the first password. Lydia entered a date.
The day Emmy disappeared.
The video opened.
A woman sat in a gray interview room. Her face was partially hidden, but she had Emma's eyes, Emma's cheekbones, and a thin scar through her right eyebrow. She appeared five or six years older.
A male interviewer asked, "State your name."
"Emma Vale Sterling."
"State your objective."
"Recover the ledger before Subject E-17 becomes active."
"And if E-17 refuses cooperation?"
The woman lifted her face fully toward the camera.
"I replace her."
The recording ended.
Emma did not realize she had gripped the pew until her knuckles ached.
"When was that filmed?"
Ruth checked the metadata. "Four years ago. Two weeks before Julian met you."
Lydia said, "Gabriel may have used her to test Julian. He may have believed he was courting the same woman from the beginning."
Emma remembered Julian's occasional strange comments: You used to hate jazz. You said you had never been to Prague. Why don't you wear the green dress anymore? Each time, he had dismissed it as confusion.
Maybe he had not been confused.
Emma stood. "Pier 19."
"The exchange was a trap," Lydia said.
"Yes. But they asked for the key because E-16 opened an empty box. Whatever she stole was not what they expected."
Ruth nodded. "Julian might know which Emma he married."
"He knows which one he tried to break. That is enough for now."
They reached Pier 19 at 9:26. Fog moved over the river. Shipping containers formed rusted corridors along the dock.
Emma carried the false key openly.
A black SUV waited beside a warehouse. Its rear door opened.
Julian fell out onto the pavement, hands bound, mouth bleeding.
Emma ran toward him.
A shot struck the ground between them.
A woman stepped from behind the SUV.
She wore an ivory satin dress identical to Emma's ruined dress from the condo. Her hair, posture, and face were close enough to make the world feel unreal.
May you like
She smiled at Julian.
"Tell her," she said. "Tell my little sister which one of us you proposed to first."
