Chapter 11 - The Vote That Chose a Monster

Security officers entered the archive from both ends.

Emma counted six. Their weapons remained holstered, but their formation left no path to the freight tunnel.

Gabriel's voice continued through the speaker. "No one needs to be harmed. The board is assembled. The company deserves an orderly transition."

Lydia looked at the genetic result again. "What did you do to me?"

"Come upstairs and I will explain."

Emma closed the personnel file and slipped Ruth's copied drive into her sleeve. "We go."

Ruth shook her head. "That room is designed to contain you."

"So was my marriage."

They entered the boardroom at 11:57.

The room stood seventy floors above Manhattan, wrapped in glass and winter light. Twelve directors watched Emma, Lydia, and Ruth take their places. Gabriel sat at the head, silver-haired and healthier than a dead man had any right to be.

Emma stopped across from him.

"You let me mourn you."

"I allowed you to become independent."

"You confuse abandonment with education."

A few directors shifted uneasily.

Gabriel folded his hands. "The vote concerns corporate survival, not family grievances."

"My family is your business model."

The silver-haired attorney, Martin Hale, rose. "At noon, under Article Seventeen of the Sterling succession charter, Emma Vale Sterling must identify the actor who poses the greatest immediate threat to the controlling trust. The named actor will lose all authority, access, and immunity. If Ms. Sterling cannot decide, the board will appoint a temporary guardian."

"You mean owner," Emma said.

"Guardian."

"A prettier word for thief."

The clock changed to 12:00.

Hale placed three files before Emma. GABRIEL. LYDIA. JULIAN.

"Choose."

Emma did not touch them.

Gabriel said, "Your husband assaulted you and helped steal corporate data. The rational choice is obvious."

Lydia said, "Do not listen to him. Naming Julian activates Gabriel's proxy rights."

Gabriel smiled. "Naming Lydia activates the release mechanism she designed, which will expose thousands of uninvolved employees and partners."

"And naming you?" Emma asked.

"Transfers control to your mother, a fugitive who faked her death."

The structure was perfect. Every answer rewarded another manipulator.

Emma looked at the directors. "Before I choose, I submit evidence under the domestic-threat provision."

Hale frowned. "What evidence?"

Emma connected the recorder to the boardroom system. Julian's recruitment interview played across the wall. His younger face appeared, eager and nervous.

"I understand my objective," he said in the recording. "Gain Emma's trust, encourage dependency, obtain access to memory triggers, and report emotional instability."

The directors reacted in whispers.

Gabriel remained still.

Emma played the condo recording next: Julian kicking the table, grabbing her wrist, threatening to beat her. Then she displayed Orchard files listing paired spouses and removed subjects.

"Sterling Global funded a program that placed controlled partners beside heirs and targets," Emma said. "This company created the threat it now asks me to identify."

Hale interrupted. "The charter requires a person."

"Then I choose the person who signed the Orchard authorization."

She displayed a document bearing Gabriel's signature.

Gabriel leaned back. "Forged."

"The biometric seal is authentic."

"Copied, as yours was at the deposit box."

Emma had expected the denial.

She nodded to Ruth.

Ruth projected the genetic file proving Lydia was Emma's biological mother and Gabriel was not her father.

"The trust passes through Lydia's bloodline," Emma said. "Gabriel never had a legitimate paternal claim. His proxies were invalid from the beginning."

The room erupted.

Hale called for order. Directors demanded verification. Gabriel's smile finally disappeared.

Lydia stared at Emma, stunned by the public revelation.

Emma faced Gabriel. "You are my choice."

Hale's tablet flashed.

ARTICLE SEVENTEEN ACCEPTED

NAMED THREAT: GABRIEL STERLING

All doors locked.

Gabriel stood.

"You should have chosen Julian."

The glass wall behind him darkened into a screen. A live video appeared of Emmy and Julian inside a concrete chamber. Water poured steadily through vents near the floor.

A timer counted down from ten minutes.

Gabriel said, "Because now your sister and husband will drown unless you reverse the vote."

Emma looked at the screen, then at the man who had designed every choice.

"You still think I came here alone," she said.

The fire alarms began to ring.
