Chapter 8 - The Choice Rose Built into the Walls

The control room rejected Evelyn's name.
ACCESS DENIED. ONE ATTEMPT REMAINING.
Daniel stared at the screen. "Rose would not have designed a simple password."
Naomi studied the wording. "The person who must never control the room may not be a specific individual. It may be a role."
On the monitor, water began seeping beneath Mark's chair.
Eleanor's voice returned. "Your mother loved moral puzzles. She believed principles could restrain hunger. Principles only restrain people who already have enough."
Evelyn ignored her and examined the items in the control room. A portrait of the twelve custodians hung on one wall. Beneath it, a brass plaque read: No single hand. No inherited command. No secret without witness.
Rose had not built the Lantern Room. She had built safeguards against it.
"The answer is sole custodian," Evelyn said.
Daniel nodded slowly. "No person should control it alone."
Evelyn entered the phrase.
The final chamber unlocked.
At the same moment, the countdown paused at forty-one minutes.
Behind the door stood a circular room with twelve empty chairs and a central console. Eleven key slots surrounded a glass cylinder. The twelfth slot, labeled Hart, already contained a key. Rose's brass key.
A video began playing on the wall.
Rose appeared seated at her kitchen table, thinner than Evelyn remembered but fully alert.
"Evelyn, if you are watching this, then I failed to end the danger before it reached you. I am sorry for the lies I told in the name of protection. Secrets protect children only until those children must live inside the consequences."
Rose explained that the Lantern Room had once required twelve custodians to release documents. Over time, families died, sold their positions, or surrendered access. Eleanor gathered six dormant keys through shell companies. Rose controlled four. Two were believed lost.
The Cedar Ridge deed was the legal bridge that could consolidate land ownership and access authority. If Meridian acquired the property, Eleanor could claim all dormant positions and open the archive alone.
"The missing deed is not the weapon," Rose said. "It is the map to the keys."
The video showed a list of locations hidden in the deed's survey coordinates. Evelyn recognized Riverbend, the downtown warehouse, and the stone house. Each Hart property contained part of Rose's access network.
"I prepared a different path," Rose continued. "If fraud is attempted, the archive can be transferred to public custody, but only after evidence of the conspiracy is secured outside local control. Daniel knows the law. Naomi knows the risks. You must decide whether either deserves your trust."
Daniel looked ashamed. Naomi remained focused.
The video ended with Rose's final instruction.
"Do not trade truth for one life. Find the bypass beneath the witness chair."
Evelyn dropped to her knees beside the chair positioned opposite the Hart key. Beneath it was a manual lever. She pulled.
Somewhere in the tunnels, emergency gates opened. On the monitor, water stopped rising around Mark. The countdown disappeared.
Eleanor's face twisted. "Rose cheated."
"She planned for you," Evelyn replied.
Naomi's team traced the chamber feed to an old ventilation level. Rescue officers moved through a service shaft. Eleanor saw them on another monitor and reached for a control panel.
Evelyn inserted the brass key into the witness console. The system asked for a destination authority.
Options appeared: Meridian Recovery Partners, Hart Estate Custody, Judicial Seal, Public Evidence Escrow.
Daniel warned that public escrow would release an index of the archive to federal and state agencies. It could expose innocent people named in unverified files. Judicial seal would preserve secrecy under court control, where compromised officials might bury it. Hart custody would leave Evelyn as the target. Meridian would hand Eleanor victory.
"There is no clean choice," Evelyn said.
"There never was," Daniel answered.
Rose had left not a solution but responsibility.
Evelyn selected Public Evidence Escrow with Independent Review.
The system required three witnesses. Naomi placed her badge on the scanner. Daniel entered his bar identification. The third witness slot remained empty.
On the monitor, rescue officers reached Mark's chamber. Eleanor had vanished through a rear passage.
Mark was freed, coughing and bleeding. As officers lifted him, he shouted toward the camera.
"Evelyn, stop. The deed has another page. Eleanor said your mother killed someone to get Cedar Ridge."
The accusation hit harder because it matched Thomas's recording. Rose had purchased the land from a man who later disappeared.
Before Evelyn could respond, the central console displayed a new alert.
THIRD WITNESS VERIFIED.
A name appeared.
THOMAS BELL.
Naomi spun toward the doorway.
A man stepped from the shadows behind the final chair. He was thinner than Evelyn remembered, with a healing scar across his palm and fear carved deeply into his face.
"Do not release the archive yet," Thomas said. "Rose did not kill the previous owner."

He looked at Daniel.
"But someone in this room helped hide the body."
