Owen Mercer was gone when Maya returned to Sentinel Harbor.

His office had been cleared.

His company phone rested on the desk beside a signed resignation letter.

Rachel accessed the protective trust documents.

Owen had filed an emergency declaration claiming Maya was missing during an unauthorized maritime operation.

Under the trust rules, her temporary voting authority had transferred jointly to Elena, Rachel, and Owen.

Elena and Rachel had signed nothing.

Owen had used a clause intended to preserve existing contracts. He issued Northstar a temporary continuity license, claiming the agreement was necessary to prevent global service interruptions.

“He cannot sell the company alone,” Rachel said.

“But he gave them legal access to our network,” Marcus replied.

Maya opened Owen’s resignation video.

He sat inside an unfamiliar room, wearing the same suit he had worn to the office that morning.

“I am sorry,” he began.

His voice trembled.

“Morrow showed me evidence that Sentinel Harbor would be shut down during the patent dispute. He said every employee would lose their job. He said Open Harbor would collapse with no organization maintaining it.”

Maya watched without reacting.

“I believed the continuity license would keep the system alive until the court ruled. I did not understand what Northstar intended to do.”

Someone moved behind the camera.

Owen looked toward them.

Then returned his attention to the lens.

“Maya, they know about the summit. They know every emergency route. Do not let them install the recovery patch.”

The recording ended.

Agent Ruiz examined the background.

“Owen may not be acting freely.”

“He still signed,” Elena said.

Maya remembered Julian explaining how Conrad had controlled him.

Coercion could explain a choice.

It did not erase the consequences.

But Owen’s warning mattered.

Marcus inspected the continuity license.

Northstar had already distributed a software package called the Atlas Recovery Patch to every organization participating in the Global Maritime Safety Summit.

The message claimed Sentinel Harbor had authorized the update.

Some ports had installed it.

Others were waiting.

Maya ordered an immediate suspension notice.

Northstar’s attorneys responded with a court order preventing Sentinel Harbor from interfering with its temporary license.

Rachel read the order.

“They filed this before Owen activated the trust.”

“They knew exactly when he would sign,” Maya said.

An emergency shareholder meeting was scheduled for nine the following morning.

Northstar intended to argue that Maya’s actions aboard the Resolute demonstrated unstable leadership and created unnecessary legal risk.

The language was almost identical to the medical reports Conrad had prepared before the wedding.
