Chapter 14 - THE PRISON LETTER

Julian Vale requested a meeting the following morning.
Maya initially refused.
Then Agent Ruiz told her Julian had mentioned Lucian Morrow before investigators revealed the name to him.
They met in a monitored room at the federal correctional facility.
Julian entered wearing a plain uniform. Two years in prison had changed his appearance, but not the careful way he studied Maya before speaking.
“You came,” he said.
“You have ten minutes.”
Julian placed both hands on the table.
“My father did not create Nathan.”
“He created the brother you claimed to have.”
“He created the relationship. But the name and photograph came from Morrow.”
Maya remained silent.
Julian explained that Conrad had received a file several weeks before the charity dinner. It contained Maya’s military history, evaluations, former relationships, and the photograph of Nathan Cole.
Morrow had identified Nathan as the emotional entry point.
“My father said Nathan represented the person you could not save.”
“He was wrong.”
“He believed guilt would make you trust someone who shared the same loss.”
“And you agreed to use it.”
Julian lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission no longer injured Maya. It simply confirmed what she already knew.
“Why are you telling me now?”
Julian reached into a paper folder.
A guard moved closer, but Julian only removed an envelope.
“This arrived three days ago.”
The envelope contained a photograph from the wedding aboard Sovereign Star. Julian and Maya stood beneath the flowered arch, smiling for hundreds of guests.
Someone had drawn a black line through Julian’s face.
On the back were eight words.
YOU WERE NEVER THE GROOM. YOU WERE THE TEST.
Julian looked toward the observation window.
“Morrow wanted to know whether you would recognize the plan before the proxy transferred control.”
“And when I did?”
“He learned how you responded.”
Maya understood.
The wedding had not only been an acquisition attempt.
It had also been an exercise.
Morrow had observed her precautions, her legal protections, her allies, her communication systems, and the speed at which she contacted investigators.
Julian continued.
“My father once recorded his meetings because he did not trust Morrow. I found one file before the wedding.”
“Where is it?”
“I sent it to an account my father did not know about.”
Julian recited the access information to Agent Ruiz.
The recording was recovered within minutes.
Conrad’s voice spoke first.
If Bennett refuses the marital proxy, we lose the company.
Another man answered.
No. We activate the Cole protocol.
Conrad sounded uneasy.
You told me Cole was dead.
The unidentified man laughed softly.
Death is an administrative condition, Conrad. Nothing more.
Maya listened twice.
The second voice was calm and precise.
She had heard it before, though she could not remember where.
Julian leaned toward her.
“My father was afraid of him.”
Before Maya could respond, Agent Ruiz entered the room.
An identical envelope had just been delivered to Sentinel Harbor.
This one contained no photograph.
