Chapter 2 - THE BLACKWOOD HEIR

Adrian had always believed hospitals should make exceptions for his family.

When Noah was born, he arranged for an entire maternity floor to be restricted.

When Lily needed stitches after falling from a bicycle, he called the hospital chairman because we waited fourteen minutes.

He had grown up in a world where money did not merely purchase comfort.

It rearranged reality.

St. Catherine’s Medical Center had a private entrance for donors, politicians, celebrities, and people whose names appeared on buildings.

The Blackwood family used it that morning.

Celeste arrived wearing a cream-colored maternity dress and a smile designed for photographs.

Adrian walked beside her.

His mother, Victoria Blackwood, followed with an assistant carrying gifts.

His father, Conrad, spoke quietly into his phone.

Adrian’s younger brother, Julian, arrived alone.

He did not congratulate Celeste.

He did not touch her.

He did not look at her unless she looked away first.

No one noticed.

They were too busy celebrating the future.

Adrian had told his parents about the pregnancy the night before.

He had expected anger over the affair.

Instead, his mother had embraced Celeste.

Victoria had tolerated me for eleven years.

She had praised my manners in public and criticized my background in private.

She had once told me that love was not enough to belong in a family like theirs.

Celeste belonged before she entered the room.

Her father owned hotels throughout Europe.

Her mother came from an old banking family.

She had attended the right schools, spoken the right languages, and inherited the effortless confidence of someone who had never been asked to prove her value.

To Victoria, the affair was not a scandal.

It was a correction.

“The press will need a careful announcement,” she said as they entered the private maternity suite.

Adrian removed his coat.

“There will be no announcement until the divorce is further along.”

“You cannot hide this forever.”

“I’m not trying to hide it.”

Victoria glanced toward Celeste’s stomach.

“The timing is unfortunate.”

Celeste smiled.

“Life does not always follow schedules.”

Conrad looked at her sharply.

“In this family, it usually does.”

Adrian poured coffee.

He had slept badly.

My message about the properties had remained on his screen all night.

He had called his attorney twice.

He had called the head of the family office.

He had ordered a security review of the house.

No one could determine how much I had discovered.

The uncertainty irritated him more than the discovery itself.

He believed all problems could be managed if their dimensions were known.

I had become an unknown dimension.

“Is Elena still at the house?” Victoria asked.

“She left.”

“With the children?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Italy.”

Victoria stopped arranging flowers.

“You allowed her to leave the country?”

“I did not allow anything.”

“Then bring them back.”

“Why?”

“Because abandoned wives become sympathetic very quickly.”

Celeste shifted uncomfortably.

“No one abandoned her.”

Julian laughed from near the window.

Everyone turned.

“What?” Celeste asked.

He looked at her.

“You really want to use that word?”

Adrian placed his coffee down.

“Do not start.”

Julian raised both hands.

“I said nothing.”

“You never say nothing.”

“That is an impressive sentence.”

Conrad’s voice cut through the room.

“Enough.”

Silence returned.

The Blackwood men had inherited different versions of their father.

Adrian inherited his discipline.

Julian inherited his temper.

Adrian became chief executive of Blackwood Holdings.

Julian became the family embarrassment.

He raced cars, dated actresses, fought photographers, and disappeared for weeks.

But unlike Adrian, Julian had occasionally shown kindness without expecting recognition.

When Lily was four and broke her arm, Julian had slept in the hospital chair beside her because Adrian left for a board meeting.

When Noah became interested in astronomy, Julian bought him a telescope and spent an entire winter learning constellations.

Adrian considered those gestures irresponsible.

I considered them human.

Julian’s phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

Celeste saw it.

“Excuse me,” he said.

He left the room.

Adrian watched him go.

“What is wrong with him?”

“No one knows,” Victoria replied.

Celeste moved toward the ultrasound image displayed on a stand.

“Our baby looks like Adrian.”

The image was twelve weeks old.

It looked like shadows and light.

Victoria leaned closer anyway.

“The forehead is certainly Blackwood.”

Conrad poured himself sparkling water.

“The legal structure should be completed before the birth.”

Adrian nodded.

“I’ve spoken to Grant.”

“Which trust?”

“The primary family trust.”

Conrad’s expression hardened.

“That trust is for recognized heirs.”

“The child will be recognized.”

“After the divorce.”

“The divorce does not determine paternity.”

“No, but scandal determines public confidence.”

Celeste’s smile faded.

Adrian went to her.

“We will handle it.”

She placed his hand on her stomach.

The gesture was visible to everyone.

Possessive.

Carefully practiced.

A nurse entered with a tray.

“Dr. Hart will be with you shortly.”

Victoria looked at her watch.

“He is twelve minutes late.”

The nurse glanced toward the door.

“He was reviewing additional results.”

Celeste’s fingers tightened over Adrian’s hand.

Julian reentered the room.

He had lost color.

“Who called?” Adrian asked.

“No one.”

“You left to answer your phone.”

“It was business.”

“You do not have business.”

Julian smiled without humor.

“Father, did you hear that? Apparently, I have been disowned again.”

Conrad did not respond.

Julian moved toward the coffee table.

His hand shook slightly as he reached for a cup.

Celeste watched him.

Adrian noticed.

“Do you two have a problem?”

“No,” Celeste said.

Julian answered at the same time.

“Yes.”

The room went still.

Celeste turned toward him.

Julian looked at her.

For one suspended second, something passed between them.

Fear.

Recognition.

A warning.

Then Julian shook his head.

“My problem is with the situation, not Celeste.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What situation?”

“The one where you throw away your wife and children, then expect everyone to toast you.”

Victoria sighed.

“Elena has clearly been speaking to you.”

“I haven’t spoken to Elena.”

“Then perhaps you should.”

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Stay out of my marriage.”

Julian looked at him.

“You already left it.”

Before Adrian could respond, the door opened.

Dr. Samuel Hart entered carrying a tablet and a medical file.

The nurse followed him.

She did not bring the champagne glasses Victoria had requested.

Dr. Hart greeted everyone.

His attention rested briefly on Julian.

Then on Celeste.

“Ms. Laurent, how are you feeling?”

“Wonderful.”

“No pain? Bleeding? Dizziness?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Adrian gestured toward the table.

“We were waiting for the screening results.”

“I know.”

“Is everything healthy?”

Dr. Hart did not answer immediately.

Celeste touched her stomach.

“Doctor?”

He closed the door.

“I would prefer to discuss the results with Ms. Laurent privately.”

Victoria lifted her chin.

“This is the child’s family.”

“Medical privacy belongs to the patient.”

Celeste’s voice came quickly.

“They can stay.”

Dr. Hart looked at her.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Julian set down his cup.

It struck the saucer too hard.

Adrian looked at him again.

Dr. Hart opened the file.

“The fetal development appears normal for this stage. However, the screening identified a genetic anomaly requiring further investigation.”

Celeste’s lips parted.

“What kind of anomaly?”

“A rare recessive blood disorder.”

Adrian took her hand.

“Can it be treated?”

“In many cases, yes. But that is not the primary issue we need to address today.”

Conrad stepped forward.

“What is the primary issue?”

Dr. Hart looked at Adrian.

“The disorder requires both biological parents to carry a specific mutation.”

Adrian waited.

“I do not understand.”

“Your genetic profile is already on file from the Blackwood family screening program.”

Conrad’s face changed slightly.

For years, the family had maintained extensive private medical records because of inherited cardiac disease.

Dr. Hart continued.

“You do not carry the mutation.”

Celeste pulled her hand from Adrian’s.

He looked at her.

Then back at the doctor.

“Could the mutation be spontaneous?”

“No.”

“Could my existing record be wrong?”

“We collected a second sample from you two days ago.”

Adrian went still.

The routine bloodwork.

He had not questioned it.

Dr. Hart’s voice remained calm.

“The result was the same.”

Victoria took one step backward.

Conrad’s expression became unreadable.

Julian stared at the floor.

Adrian slowly turned toward Celeste.

“What is he saying?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing. He is saying there was a mistake.”

“There was no mistake,” Dr. Hart said.

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Run it again.”

“We already did.”

“Then use another laboratory.”

“We used two.”

Celeste began breathing faster.

The nurse moved closer.

“Ms. Laurent, sit down.”

“I don’t need to sit down.”

Adrian’s eyes remained on her.

“Who is the father?”

She stared at him.

“You are.”

“The doctor just said—”

“I don’t care what he said.”

Dr. Hart closed the file.

“There is additional information.”

Conrad turned.

“What additional information?”

“The mutation is extremely rare. However, it is present in another genetic profile contained in the family’s medical archive.”

No one spoke.

Dr. Hart’s gaze moved toward Julian.

Adrian followed it.

Victoria raised one hand to her mouth.

Conrad looked at his younger son.

Julian did not move.

Celeste whispered, “Don’t.”

Adrian’s face emptied of expression.

It was the same expression he wore during hostile acquisitions.

The calm before destruction.

He looked from Celeste to Julian.

“How long?”

Julian lifted his head.

“Adrian—”

“How long?”

“It was not—”

Adrian crossed the room and struck him.

The punch knocked Julian against the table.

Glasses shattered.

Celeste screamed.

Victoria shouted Adrian’s name.

Conrad grabbed his arm, but Adrian tore free.

“You slept with her?”

Julian wiped blood from his mouth.

His eyes burned with anger and shame.

“She came to me.”

Adrian lunged again.

This time, hospital security entered.

Two guards restrained him as he shouted across the room.

“You knew she was carrying my child!”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Your child?”

Celeste sank into a chair.

The nurse knelt beside her.

Adrian stopped struggling.

He looked at his brother.

Julian’s voice became quieter.

“You never asked why she chose you.”

The words reached everyone.

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

“What does that mean?”

Celeste covered her face.

Julian looked at her.

“Tell him.”

She shook her head.

“Tell me what?” Adrian demanded.

Dr. Hart stepped between them.

“This conversation should continue outside the hospital.”

“No one leaves,” Conrad said.

His voice was cold enough to silence the room.

He looked at Celeste.

“What did you do?”

She began to cry.

Not delicately.

Not beautifully.

Her shoulders shook.

Her makeup streaked beneath her eyes.

“I did not know whose baby it was.”

Victoria stared at her.

“You slept with both of them?”

Celeste said nothing.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time that morning, the certainty left him.

He looked older.

Smaller.

Human.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from his attorney.

Elena’s counsel has filed an emergency petition freezing multiple accounts. We need to speak immediately.

Adrian read it.

Another message followed.

There may be criminal exposure related to forged authorizations and misappropriation of the children’s trust.

Conrad saw his son’s face.

“What now?”

Adrian locked the screen.

“Nothing.”

Julian laughed again.

“This has been a remarkable morning for nothing.”

Adrian turned toward him.

But before he could speak, Celeste made a sound of pain.

The nurse stood quickly.

“Doctor.”

Dr. Hart moved toward her.

Celeste gripped the edge of the chair.

“I’m bleeding.”

Everything changed.

The argument vanished beneath medical commands.

The nurse called for a stretcher.

Dr. Hart ordered the family out.

Adrian tried to follow, but the doors closed before him.

He stood in the corridor with blood on his knuckles and glass beneath his shoes.

Victoria stared at the ultrasound photograph still resting among the white roses.

Conrad took out his phone.

Julian leaned against the wall with a split lip.

For the first time, the three Blackwood men looked equally powerless.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

His attorney.

He answered.

“What did Elena do?”

The voice on the other end replied.

“She found more than the properties.”

Adrian looked down the corridor toward the doors where Celeste had disappeared.

“What else is there?”

May you like

His attorney hesitated.

“That is what I need you to tell me.”
