Chapter 11 - THE CHILDREN’S TRUST

The children had vanished.
The hotel security team found no forced entry.
The hallway cameras had looped the same thirty seconds for eleven minutes.
Mrs. Bellini had been sedated but survived.
On the bedside table, someone left the stuffed rabbit.
The brass key was missing.
Noah had hidden a note inside the torn seam.
Mom, they think we don’t know them.
Beneath it, he had drawn the gold Blackwood crest.
The kidnappers used a family vehicle.
Adrian arrived at the hotel before the police finished searching.
He saw the empty beds and collapsed against the wall.
“What happened?”
I struck him.
The sound silenced the room.
“You brought them into this family.”
“I know.”
“You left them.”
“I know.”
“You chose Celeste.”
“I know.”
He did not defend himself.
That made me angrier.
“Find them.”
“I will.”
Julian entered behind him.
He carried the Blackwood security archive.
A vehicle bearing the crest left the hotel garage twenty-four minutes earlier.
The driver’s identity card belonged to a dead man.
The route ended near a private chapel outside Florence.
The same chapel where Adrian and I had supposedly married.
My wedding had taken place in Italy because Victoria insisted the Blackwoods honor family tradition.
Now I understood the location had been chosen for another reason.
Beneath the chapel were old Bellmere trust offices.
The ceremony had never been about love.
It had placed the hidden heir inside Conrad’s control.
Police surrounded the chapel.
Daniel stopped me before I entered.
“They asked for you.”
“They have my children.”
“That does not mean you walk in alone.”
“Yes, it does.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“I’m going with her.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“You are the reason they are there.”
“And I will be the reason they come out.”
He removed the Blackwood signet ring from his hand.
“My father gave me this when I became chief executive. It opens the chapel’s lower archive.”
Julian took it.
“We go together.”
We entered through the main doors.
Candles lined the aisle exactly as they had on my wedding day.
My dress had been ivory.
Adrian had waited at the altar.
My mother had refused to attend, claiming illness.
I had resented her for years.
Now I knew she had been unable to watch me enter the trap.
Noah and Lily sat near the altar.
Their hands were tied, but they were unharmed.
Celeste stood behind them.
She held no weapon.
Conrad did.
He had escaped custody during a hospital transfer arranged with forged orders.
His influence still reached through institutions built to contain him.
“You came,” he said.
“Release them.”
“When the ceremony is completed.”
“What ceremony?”
A man stepped from the shadows wearing judicial robes.
A disgraced former magistrate who had served the Blackwoods for decades.
Documents waited on the altar.
Conrad gestured toward Julian.
“Bellmere requires unified control.”
Julian laughed.
“You expect Elena to marry me?”
Adrian stepped in front of him.
“They are twins.”
“Not by law.”
“You are insane.”
“No. I am preserving an empire.”
The documents did not describe a marriage.
They transferred my Bellmere rights to Julian’s control through a civil partnership.
The ceremony was symbolic, but the signatures were real.
“If I sign, you release the children?”
“Yes.”
“No,” Noah shouted.
Conrad pressed the gun against his shoulder.
“Silence.”
Adrian moved.
The gun shifted toward him.
“Stay back.”
Celeste looked at me.
Her eyes moved toward the candles.
Then to the floor.
A trail of spilled oil led beneath the altar.
Conrad had prepared to burn the chapel.
Destroy the heirs.
Destroy the records.
Blame the deaths on a rescue attempt.
“Why is Celeste here?” I asked.
Conrad smiled.
“She finally understood that her child needs a family.”
Celeste’s face remained blank.
I approached the altar.
Daniel’s voice sounded through the hidden device in my earring.
Keep him talking.
“Who is my father?” I asked.
Conrad’s smile faded.
“That does not matter.”
“It matters to Isabella.”
“Isabella confused survival with revenge.”
“Who was he?”
Conrad glanced toward Adrian.
The movement was small.
But I saw it.
So did Adrian.
“No,” Adrian whispered.
Victoria had said my father was not Conrad.
Isabella had said she was coming for the man who fathered me.
I looked at Adrian.
Then at Conrad.
“Was my father a Blackwood?”
Conrad raised the weapon.
“Sign.”
Julian moved toward the children.
Celeste knocked over a candle.
Fire raced along the oil.
Conrad turned.
Adrian lunged.
The gun fired.
Lily screamed.
Adrian fell.
The bullet struck his side.
Julian tackled Conrad.
I ran to the children.
Celeste cut Noah’s restraints with a shard of glass.
“Take them!”
Smoke filled the chapel.
The former magistrate fled.
Daniel and police entered through the side doors.
Conrad and Julian fought near the altar.
Noah grabbed Lily.
I dragged Adrian toward the aisle.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“Leave me,” he gasped.
“No.”
“Elena.”
“You already left once. I’m not becoming you.”
We reached the entrance as part of the ceiling collapsed.
Julian emerged through the smoke carrying the trust documents.
Police pulled Conrad out behind him.
Celeste remained inside.
Adrian tried to stand.
“The baby.”
A figure appeared in the flames.
Celeste stumbled through the doorway.
She collapsed on the chapel steps.
Her hands covered her stomach.
Doctors rushed to her.
The children were safe.
Adrian survived surgery.
Conrad returned to custody.
The forged ceremony documents burned.
The Bellmere originals survived in Julian’s hands.
It should have felt like victory.
Then Daniel opened the trust archive recovered beneath the chapel.
Inside was the original certificate from my wedding.
It contained my signature.
Adrian’s signature.
And a third signature under paternal authorization.
The name was unmistakable.
Thomas Blackwood.
May you like
Adrian’s grandfather.
A man who had supposedly died ten years before I was born.
