Chapter 10 - THE GENERAL'S WAR

Bell claimed investigators had released him after evidence showed Kessler forged the access orders used at the naval center. He then tracked Caroline's helicopter using an emergency command beacon.
None of that explained why he had shot Luis.
Luis lay against the wall, bleeding from his shoulder but conscious. His pistol remained on the floor beyond reach.
Eleanor struggled to sit up. "Marcus, stop."
Bell aimed at the medical console beside her. "Tell Caroline what this room controls."
A glass case beneath the console contained the leather ledger and Caroline's stolen data key. The key had been inserted into a reader but not activated.
Eleanor said Black Ridge housed the original Crown archive. If decrypted, it would reveal every account, asset, operative, and protected identity. If destroyed, decades of evidence would vanish with it.
Bell wanted the archive for national security.
Eleanor wanted to separate the evidence from innocent identities before release.
Luis wanted to destroy everything.
"And Meridian Crown?" Caroline asked.
"They want to copy it," Eleanor said. "Kessler was only one faction. Others are already coming."
A perimeter alarm sounded.
Multiple vehicles approached through the forest. Armed drones rose above the trees.
Bell's expression hardened. "We are out of time. Give me the key."
Caroline looked at Eleanor. "Why did you tell us not to trust him?"
"Because Marcus believes institutions are innocent even when people inside them are not. He will preserve the machinery that created the Crown if he thinks the machinery can serve the country."
Bell answered, "And your mother will burn intelligence that could prevent wars because she cannot accept oversight."
"Oversight?" Eleanor said. "You hid my death from Congress, my daughters, and every court in the country."
"At your request."
"A request made while I was hunted and drugged."
Caroline raised one hand. "Enough."
The authority in her voice silenced both of them.
She ordered Mercer to defend the facility without engaging unless attacked. Then she examined the archive controls. The system allowed three paths: decrypt, erase, or partition.
Partition required two biometric authorizations from the architect's original team.
Eleanor placed her hand on the first scanner.
The second scanner displayed a name.
RICHARD HAYES.
Caroline stared.
Eleanor closed her eyes. "I built the channels. Your father built the authorization lattice. He thought it was a corporate security project. His biometric pattern became the second root key."
Richard was ninety miles away.
The attacking vehicles reached the outer gate.
Mercer's voice came over the radio. "Colonel, hostiles are deploying. We can hold for perhaps twelve minutes."
Bell said, "Decrypt now. We take the archive and sort it later."
Luis, pale from blood loss, said, "Erase it. No government can protect those names once copied."
Eleanor looked at Caroline. "Call your father."
Richard answered on the first ring.
When Caroline explained, he was silent.
"You need my hand," he finally said.
"We need your biometric authorization. A secure aircraft can bring you, but not before the perimeter fails."
Richard asked whether remote authorization was possible.
It was, if he entered a Hayes corporate vault containing the original scanner used to create his signature. The vault was beneath the estate.
Richard had never told either daughter it existed.
"I can be there in seven minutes," he said.
"Security will escort you. Do not touch anything except the scanner."
He gave a humorless laugh. "You still think I cannot follow an order."
"You have spent my entire life proving it. Prove something else tonight."
At the estate, Richard entered the hidden vault with a federal team. The scanner activated.
At Black Ridge, Eleanor pressed her palm to the first plate.
Richard pressed his hand to the second.
The partition sequence began.
Then the system rejected him.
BIOMETRIC ROOT MISMATCH.
A second line appeared.
RICHARD HAYES IS NOT THE ORIGINAL AUTHORIZER.
Eleanor's face went white.
Bell whispered, "Then who is?"
May you like
The screen displayed the answer.
GRACE HAYES.
