Chapter 9 - Five Minutes Before Midnight

The execution chamber was colder than I expected.

Mom sat beyond the glass while officials completed their final checks.

Victor took the seat beside me.

“After tonight,” he whispered, “you need to stop filling Ethan’s head with fantasies.”

I turned toward him.

“Dad left a video.”

For the first time, his eyes changed.

“What video?”

“The one showing you in his study.”

His expression recovered quickly.

“You’re lying.”

“Federal agents are coming.”

He leaned closer.

“Then they will arrive too late.”

At 11:53 P.M., Ethan entered the chamber.

Victor had permitted the goodbye because he believed my brother was fully under his control.

Ethan hugged Mom.

Then he whispered that he knew who had hidden the knife.

The supervisor halted the procedure.

When Ethan pointed at Adrian, Victor stood and accused him of confusion.

Then Ethan produced the recorder.

Adrian tried to escape.

The doors locked.

A state investigator played the audio through the chamber speakers.

Adrian’s voice echoed through the room.

“My father made the plan. I handled the bedroom.”

The reporters began shouting questions.

Victor rushed toward the control-room door.

Two guards blocked him.

“You have no authority to hold me,” he snapped.

The main entrance opened.

Federal agents entered with the prosecutor who had received Dad’s archive.

“We do,” she said.

She presented the emergency court order.

The execution was suspended.

Victor, Adrian, the police chief, Gregory Hale, and three state officials were named in federal warrants covering conspiracy, fraud, witness intimidation, obstruction of justice, and homicide-related offenses.

Uncle Victor stared at me as an agent placed him in handcuffs.

“Your father was going to destroy everything we built,” he said.

“You stole everything he built.”

“He would have handed the company to your mother.”

“It belonged to them.”

Victor’s face twisted.

“He always got everything.”

There it was.

Not loyalty.

Not family.

Not business necessity.

Jealousy.

Victor had spent his life standing beside my father, believing every success should have been his. When stealing money was no longer enough, he decided to steal the entire future.

Adrian broke during questioning before sunrise.

He admitted drugging Mom’s tea and planting the knife.

He confessed that Victor confronted Dad in the study. When Dad refused to surrender the evidence, Victor attacked him.

Adrian then helped stage the scene.

The letter was forged using samples from company records.

Mom’s fingerprints were transferred to the hidden knife while she was unconscious.

Adrian’s restaurant alibi had been arranged in advance.

Detective Mercer was released.

Mom was removed from the chamber and taken to a private holding room.

At 2:16 A.M., Ethan and I were allowed to see her.

She was no longer blindfolded.

When the door opened, she stood.

Ethan ran into her arms.

Mom held him with one arm and reached for me with the other.

For nine months, people had told us the evidence was complete.

The jury had spoken.

The courts had ruled.

The clock could not be stopped.

But the clock had stopped.

May you like

And the truth was finally moving again.
