Chapter 7 - Ethan’s Dangerous Plan

Ethan explained that he had remembered more than he initially admitted.

On the night Dad died, he woke when he heard footsteps upstairs.

He opened his bedroom door and saw Adrian entering our parents’ room.

Adrian carried a cloth wrapped around a kitchen knife.

Ethan followed him.

Through the half-open door, he watched Adrian lift the mattress and slide the knife beneath it.

Adrian saw him in the hallway.

“He told me it was a game,” Ethan said. “Then Uncle Victor came upstairs and told me Mom would go away forever if I talked.”

“Why didn’t you tell the police?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The morning after Dad died. I told Uncle Victor I wanted to speak to Detective Mercer. He said the detective already knew and that talking again would make you get arrested too.”

Victor had controlled every conversation Ethan had with investigators.

During the trial, Adrian visited him repeatedly.

He reminded Ethan that accidents could happen to people who caused problems.

At the boarding school, Ethan began recording those visits.

Most of the conversations were vague.

Then, two days earlier, Ethan confronted Adrian directly.

“I told him I remembered the knife,” Ethan said. “He laughed because he thought no one would believe me.”

I pressed play.

Adrian’s voice filled the room.

“You should forget that night.”

“I saw you put it under Mom’s bed.”

“You saw what we needed you to see.”

“Why did you do it?”

“Because your father was going to ruin everything.”

“Did Uncle Victor tell you to?”

There was a long pause.

Then Adrian said, “My father made the plan. I handled the bedroom. That’s all you need to know.”

The recording continued.

Adrian admitted entering the house through the side gate.

He described wiping the knife and pressing Mom’s fingers around its handle while she was unconscious after someone drugged her tea.

He did not directly admit killing Dad, but he confirmed the frame-up.

We brought the recording to Detective Mercer.

He listened twice.

Then he removed his badge and placed it on his desk.

“I need to tell you something,” he said.

Victor had paid the police chief to restrict the original investigation.

Mercer had been ordered not to examine the financial records, not to verify Adrian’s alibi, and not to interview Ethan alone.

“Why are you telling us now?” I asked.

“Because I told myself the evidence against your mother was still convincing. It was easier than admitting I helped bury the truth.”

“Will you testify?”

“Yes.”

Before he could contact federal authorities, three officers entered the station and arrested him for evidence tampering.

They seized Ethan’s recorder.

I had already sent copies to Maya.

But before she could publish them, her website went offline and her office was searched under a sealed warrant.

Ethan and I were placed under “protective supervision.”

Victor regained custody of him.

The execution remained scheduled.

Direct evidence existed.
