Chapter 11 - The Ten-Minute Blackout

Emergency lighting turned the boardroom red.
The public stream disconnected.
Somewhere below, alarms began ringing.
Margaret grabbed Nathan’s arm.
“Stay away from the windows.”
Adrian moved toward the boardroom exit.
Nathan blocked him.
“Where are you going?”
“You wanted Orion’s attention. You have it.”
“Who was on the phone?”
Adrian tried to push past him.
Nathan did not move.
“Was it the passenger designated O-1?”
Adrian’s expression revealed recognition.
“You found the second manifest.”
“Who was on the plane?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were working for them.”
“I worked for an investment group.”
“You destroyed Blackridge for them.”
“I did what your father asked me to do.”
Nathan took out the copied fragment from vault B-17.
“You mean the edited recording?”
Adrian’s eyes shifted toward the dark screen.
Nathan continued.
“The missing section says Orion planned to remove you after the transfer.”
“That’s not true.”
“You opened the vault when I told you.”
Adrian said nothing.
“You’ve never trusted them,” Nathan said. “You only trusted the reward they promised.”
A crash sounded in the hallway.
The boardroom door opened.
Two men in maintenance jackets entered. One carried a network control unit. The other moved directly toward the server cabinet.
Elena’s voice crackled through Nathan’s earpiece.
“They’re trying to destroy the local recording.”
Margaret stepped into the corridor and shouted for building security.
The men ignored her.
Nathan reached the server cabinet first and removed the storage drive.
One of the men grabbed his coat.
Nathan twisted away and threw the drive toward Vanessa.
“Take it.”
She caught it and ran toward the opposite door.
Adrian seized the attacker’s arm.
“Not here,” he said.
The man looked at him with contempt.
“You were told to correct the failure.”
Adrian froze.
The second man pushed the network unit against the server rack. A high-frequency tone filled the room.
Screens flickered.
Phones restarted.
Electronic locks disengaged throughout the floor.
The men left before security arrived.
The blackout lasted ten minutes.
When power returned, Crown Lake’s internal servers had been wiped.
But Vanessa still held the physical drive.
Elena joined them from the parking garage.
“The public stream ended before Adrian’s full call was saved to the external archive.”
Nathan looked toward the boardroom camera.
“What survived?”
“The first seven minutes. Your removal, the financial documents, Charles’s statement, and the beginning of the call.”
“Enough for an investigation?”
Margaret nodded.
“Enough to freeze the transfer. Not enough to prove the full conspiracy.”
Leonard Pike approached Adrian.
“You told us Blackridge failed because Nathan concealed losses.”
Adrian straightened his jacket.
“It did.”
“We all saw your authorization on the reserve withdrawal.”
“An authorization can be copied.”
Vanessa handed the drive to Elena.
“What about that?”
Adrian looked at her.
“You think Nathan will forgive you because you changed one sentence in a contract?”
“I didn’t do it for forgiveness.”
“Then why?”
“Because you told me I would become chairwoman of Blackridge.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You would have lasted a month.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You never intended to give me control.”
“No.”
The admission came without hesitation.
“You were useful because Nathan trusted you,” Adrian continued. “Once he was removed, your signature was the only value you had left.”
Vanessa stepped back as if he had struck her, though he had not touched her.
Nathan felt no satisfaction in watching her illusion collapse.
Only a tired recognition.
Adrian turned to Nathan.
“Do you feel better now? You were right about both of us.”
“No.”
“Then what do you want?”
“The name behind Orion.”
Adrian looked toward the windows.
“You think there is one name.”
“There is always someone at the top.”
“Not this time.”
Margaret received a call from Daniel Hurst.
She listened, then covered the phone.
“Federal investigators are downstairs. They have temporary orders freezing Halcyon’s transfer and Crown Lake’s purchase.”
Nathan looked at Adrian.
The main theft was stopped.
Blackridge’s ownership would not change that morning.
But Adrian seemed almost relieved.
“You’re not afraid of being arrested,” Nathan said.
“I’m afraid of being left available.”
“For what?”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Orion does not eliminate failed partners by killing them. That creates attention.”
“What do they do?”
“They rewrite the evidence until the failed partner becomes the architect.”
Elevator doors opened in the hallway.
Investigators entered with building security.
Adrian extended his hands calmly.

Before they reached him, he whispered to Nathan.
“By sunset, every document you found will identify you as Orion’s founder.”
