Chapter 9 - What the Guests Heard
The wedding ended before dinner.
Boats transported guests back to the main harbor in groups. Those staying overnight were permitted to return to their villas, but all reception services were suspended.
Vanessa locked herself inside the bridal suite.
Margaret remained with her.
Richard spent nearly an hour shouting at resort employees before security escorted him to his villa.
Claire took Lily to the island’s medical office for a precautionary examination. The doctor confirmed that she was unharmed.
Only after Lily fell asleep in their villa did Claire allow herself to cry.
She sat beside the bed, holding her daughter’s hand.
A quiet knock sounded at the door.
Ethan stood outside.
He had removed his white tuxedo jacket and loosened his bow tie.
“How is Lily?”
“She is safe.”
“Can I see her?”
Claire moved aside.
Ethan entered quietly and stood near the bed.
“I should have stopped Vanessa sooner,” he said.
“You did not know what she would do.”
“I knew she could be cruel. I kept telling myself it was stress.”
Claire looked at him.
“People often rename cruelty when they are afraid of the truth.”
Ethan sat in a chair near the window.
“I am not marrying her.”
Claire had expected the words, but hearing them still carried weight.
“Are you sure?”
“I was sure when she looked at Lily and cared more about the dress.”
He removed the wedding ring from his pocket. The ceremony had been completed, but the marriage documents had not yet been filed with local authorities.
“My family’s lawyer says the registration can be stopped.”
Claire nodded.
“What will you tell Vanessa?”
“The truth.”
The next morning, the unfinished wedding became international news.
Videos recorded by guests showed Vanessa shouting at Lily and moving toward her near the terrace edge. Other videos showed Margaret blaming the child and Claire shutting down the event.
The most widely shared clip captured Daniel’s announcement.
Ms. Claire Blackthorne owns this island.
Public opinion changed quickly.
Companies that had offered Vanessa sponsorship agreements withdrew them. A magazine canceled its exclusive wedding feature. Several charities removed her from upcoming events.
Vanessa blamed Claire for everything.
“You destroyed my life,” she shouted when Claire entered the bridal suite later that morning.
Claire remained near the doorway.
“No. I stopped protecting you from consequences.”
Margaret stood beside the window.
“Fix this.”
“How?”
“Release a statement saying Lily slipped and Vanessa was trying to help.”
“That would be a lie.”
“It would protect the family.”
“It would protect Vanessa.”
“She is your sister.”
“Lily is my daughter.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You are choosing one child over another.”
“Vanessa is an adult. Lily is a child. There should never have been a choice.”
Richard entered behind Claire.
He had spent the morning speaking with lawyers and financial advisers.
“You will transfer the island back to the investment company,” he demanded.
Claire almost smiled.
“You still think your name gives you authority over my business.”
“I gave you that name.”
“And I gave it value.”
Richard’s face reddened.
“You owe this family everything.”
Claire opened her bag and placed several documents on the table.
They showed years of payments she had made for her parents’ house, Vanessa’s apartment, family debts, travel, and private memberships.
“I have given this family more than twelve million dollars.”
Margaret stared at the total.
Claire continued.
“Every payment ends today.”
“You cannot abandon your parents.”
“I am not abandoning you. I am ending your access to me.”
Richard stepped closer.
“You will regret this.”
