Chapter 4 - Welcome to Aurore Island

The resort staff greeted Claire privately before the other guests arrived.
Daniel Mercier met her at the dock and handed her a folder containing final schedules, security plans, and weather reports.
“We have prepared the western terrace for the ceremony,” he explained. “The ocean wind may strengthen near sunset, but the protective barriers have been inspected.”
Claire reviewed every page.
“What about children?”
“There are only four attending. Staff members have been assigned near the terrace entrances and the lower garden.”
“Good.”
Daniel hesitated.
“There is one more matter.”
He showed her a list of requests from Vanessa.
Several involved removing visible security personnel because Vanessa believed they would interfere with photographs.
Claire immediately rejected the request.
“Security stays.”
“I expected that answer.”
“Do not tell Vanessa the order came from me. Say it is island policy.”
Daniel nodded.
Claire wanted the wedding weekend to remain peaceful. She had no interest in revealing her ownership or challenging Vanessa publicly.
That plan became difficult within hours.
Vanessa arrived by yacht wearing oversized sunglasses and carrying a small white dog, although the resort had clearly informed guests that animals were not allowed near food-service areas.
When a staff member politely explained the rule, Vanessa demanded his name.
Claire stepped in.
“The dog can stay in your villa with a sitter.”
Vanessa removed her sunglasses.
“You are already trying to control my wedding.”
“I am repeating the resort policy.”
“You are the maid of honor, Claire. Your job is to support me.”
“My job is not to mistreat employees.”
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“You always have to prove you are better than everyone.”
Ethan arrived behind her and heard the final sentence.
“Is something wrong?” he asked.
Vanessa instantly changed her expression.
“Nothing. Claire is stressed.”
She kissed Ethan and led him toward the welcome party.
Claire watched them leave.
That evening, Margaret cornered her near the pool.
“Why are you provoking your sister?”
“I asked her to follow a basic rule.”
“This weekend is not about rules. It is about family.”
“Rules are what protect people when family fails.”
Margaret’s smile disappeared.
“You have become very cold since James died.”
Claire felt the words strike deeper than Margaret probably intended.
She refused to show it.
“Do not use my husband’s death to defend Vanessa.”
“I am only saying that grief changed you.”
“Grief taught me not to waste time pretending cruelty is love.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Your sister is happy. Do not punish her because your own marriage ended in tragedy.”
Claire stared at her mother.
For a moment, the music and conversation around the pool seemed to fade.
Then Lily ran toward them carrying a shell she had found near the beach.
“Mom, look.”
Claire turned away from Margaret and knelt.
The shell was small, white, and perfectly curved.
“It is beautiful.”
“I found two,” Lily said. “One for me and one for Aunt Vanessa.”
Margaret smiled.
“You see? Even Lily understands that Vanessa deserves to feel special.”
Claire rose slowly.
“Lily understands kindness. Do not confuse that with obedience.”

She took her daughter’s hand and walked back toward their villa.
Behind them, Margaret remained beside the pool, watching with narrowed eyes.
