Chapter 7 - The Lie Before the Fall

“Let go of her.”

Elena’s voice cut through the corridor.

Sarah released Mia but did not step away.

“What is she doing out here?”

“She was with Rosa.”

“She was trying to open the garden door.”

Mia ran to Elena.

“The woman came back.”

Sarah’s face changed.

“What woman?”

“The one in the green coat.”

Elena watched Sarah carefully.

Her surprise looked real.

Vivian appeared behind them.

“What is happening?”

Mia pointed toward the glass.

“Grandma Marianne was outside.”

Vivian stopped.

The color drained from her face so quickly that Elena knew Daniel had been right.

Vivian knew.

Sarah looked between them.

“Who is Marianne?”

No one answered.

Sarah turned to her mother.

“Who is she?”

Vivian regained control.

“The child is confused.”

“I saw her,” Mia insisted.

Vivian reached toward her.

Elena stepped between them.

“Do not touch my daughter.”

Guests had begun gathering at the ballroom entrance.

Sarah noticed the watching faces and lowered her voice.

“This family has tolerated enough drama from you.”

Elena almost laughed.

“You forged my signature.”

The corridor became completely silent.

Sarah stared at her.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“The guest-book signature. The printer in your office. The trust that gives you control of every Mercer property surrounding Bellweather.”

“You approved that agreement.”

“I never signed it.”

“You were going to.”

“Was I?”

Sarah looked toward Vivian.

Vivian’s expression told her something had gone wrong.

Sarah whispered, “Mother?”

“Not here.”

Elena lifted her phone.

“It ends here.”

Sarah saw the speaker call and moved closer.

“Do not do this in front of the donors.”

“You brought the donors into my house and told them it was yours.”

“I saved this place after Adrian died.”

“You used his death to move into it.”

“I organized everything while you hid in your office.”

“I was raising his daughter.”

“And I was preserving his family’s reputation.”

Elena’s voice hardened.

“By stealing money from a children’s hospital?”

The guests reacted.

Sarah’s confidence broke.

“That is a lie.”

“Northstar Fiduciary Holdings.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

Sarah looked at her.

“You said those accounts were protected.”

It was the first real confession.

Small, accidental and impossible to retract.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Elena, the investigators are entering now.”

Sarah turned toward the ballroom.

“Call them off.”

“No.”

“The transfer is complete.”

“Cancel the property transfer,” Elena said.

Daniel confirmed the cancellation.

The events that followed unfolded almost exactly as Elena had planned.

Almost.

Daniel publicly confirmed that Elena remained Bellweather’s sole legal owner.

Vivian demanded to know why Sarah had claimed she bought the mansion.

The investigators entered through the ballroom doors.

But when Daniel revealed the second deed filed under Marianne’s identity, Elena was no longer watching Sarah.

She was watching Vivian.

Vivian looked terrified.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

The ballroom lights went out.

Guests screamed and phones illuminated the darkness.

Elena pulled Mia against her.

“Stay with me.”

Through the confusion, she heard footsteps running across the gallery.

Then a door slammed above them.

Emergency lights came on.

Sarah was gone.

So was Vivian.

Investigator Lena Ortiz approached with two officers.

“Seal the exits.”

The officers moved immediately.

Daniel ended the call and entered the ballroom in person from the side corridor.

“Elena, are you all right?”

“Find Sarah and Vivian.”

Ortiz spoke into her radio.

“Both subjects may be moving through the east wing.”

Mia tugged Elena’s sleeve.

“The green-coat woman went upstairs.”

“You saw her?”

“Before the lights went off.”

“Where?”

“Daddy’s office.”

Elena ran toward the staircase.

Daniel caught up.

“Wait for the officers.”

“My mother may be up there.”

“Or someone wants you to believe she is.”

They reached Gabriel’s old study.

The door was open.

Inside, the hidden compartment stood exposed.

The folders were gone.

The recorder was gone.

Only Adrian’s letter remained on the desk.

Daniel searched the room.

“No one.”

A window near the bookcase was open.

Rain blew through it.

Elena looked down toward the terrace. A figure in white crossed the lawn toward the greenhouse.

Sarah.

Ortiz and two officers ran after her.

Another officer reported that Vivian had been stopped near the service exit carrying a suitcase.

Daniel looked at the empty compartment.

“They knew where the evidence was.”

“Sarah could have followed us.”

“Or Rosa told them.”

Elena refused to believe it.

Then she saw a small piece of fabric caught on the metal door.

Dark green wool.

The woman had been there.

She had taken Adrian’s investigation.

But she had left one thing behind.

A fresh envelope rested beneath his letter.

Elena opened it.

Inside was a single photograph of Adrian taken three days before his death.

He stood beside Marianne at a private airfield.

On the back, Marianne had written:

Adrian learned the truth about the crash.

Vivian did not kill him.

May you like

Sarah did not kill him.

The person responsible is still living inside Bellweather.
