Chapter 10 - The Box Adrian Left Behind

Three weeks after the gala, Bellweather began to feel like a home again.

Sarah and Vivian remained in custody while prosecutors prepared charges for fraud, forgery, theft and conspiracy.

Several of Sarah’s shell companies had been seized. More than two million dollars had already been recovered for the children’s hospital.

Elena personally repaid the remaining amount.

She did not make a public announcement.

She did not attach her name to the donation.

She simply ensured that the hospital received what had been promised.

The ballroom was closed for renovations. The silver sign announcing Sarah’s future for Bellweather had been destroyed.

In its place, Elena planned to create a community foundation managed by independent trustees. Mia helped choose its first program: emergency housing for mothers and children.

The victory was real.

Sarah had lost the mansion she tried to steal.

Vivian had lost the influence she used to control the family.

Elena had reclaimed her home, protected her daughter and restored the stolen charitable funds.

But the question of Marianne remained.

Investigators watched the Grayhaven post office box for two Fridays.

No one came.

The green coat found in the hidden study contained no usable fingerprints. The fibers were old, and the label had been removed.

Marianne’s deed claim remained active.

Daniel’s black key belonged to a private vault facility in the financial district. The facility had been purchased by Northstar twenty years earlier and later transferred to another company.

On Monday morning, Elena and Daniel entered the building with Investigator Ortiz.

The manager led them underground to a corridor lined with steel doors.

“Box 417,” he said.

The black key opened the first lock.

Elena entered a code Adrian had written on the back of an old photograph.

Mia’s birthday.

The second lock released.

Inside the box was a sealed file, an external hard drive and a small leather journal.

The journal belonged to Adrian.

Elena opened the first page.

If Elena is reading this, Marianne has returned, or someone is using her identity.

Do not assume those are the same thing.

Elena sat at the private viewing table and continued.

Adrian had recorded every stage of his investigation.

He found evidence that Gabriel Mercer had hidden Marianne after the Grayhaven crash. He also found airline records indicating that she traveled under three different names during the following decade.

One identity belonged to a financial investigator in Zurich.

Another belonged to an art dealer in Montreal.

The third belonged to a deceased woman named Claire North.

Adrian believed Marianne had spent years trying to identify the secret directors of Northstar Fiduciary Holdings.

The journal also contained an apology.

Elena,

I wanted to tell you. Every time I tried, I imagined what it would do to you. You survived losing her once. I was afraid the truth would make you lose her again in a different way.

Marianne is alive.

But she may not be free.

Elena closed her eyes.

Daniel stood on the other side of the table, giving her silence.

She turned several pages.

Near the end, Adrian described his meeting with Marianne at the private airfield.

She was frightened and refused to let me photograph her face. She said Northstar had people inside Mercer Development, the Vale family and law enforcement.

She warned me that Gabriel’s purchase of Bellweather was not a theft.

It was a containment strategy.

The property holds something Northstar has searched for since before Elena was born.

She would not tell me what.

Elena looked at Ortiz.

“Did your team know this?”

“No.”

“Could Northstar have investigators inside the department?”

“It’s possible.”

Daniel disconnected the external hard drive from the viewing terminal.

“We should not open this on a networked system.”

The sealed file contained one document.

A birth certificate.

Elena initially thought it was her own.

The child’s name was Elena Rose Mercer.

The date of birth was correct.

Gabriel Mercer was listed as the father.

But the mother’s name was not Marianne Mercer.

It was Catherine North.

Elena stared at the page.

“This is false.”

Daniel examined the seal.

“It appears original.”

“My mother’s name was Marianne.”

“Marianne may have used another identity.”

“Then why Catherine North?”

Ortiz photographed the document.

“The North name may connect to Northstar.”

Elena returned to Adrian’s journal.

The final written entry was dated the morning of his death.

Sarah followed me yesterday.

Vivian knows more than she admits, but neither of them understands what Northstar wants.

Thomas finally told me what is hidden at Bellweather.

I will meet Marianne tonight and confirm it.

If I do not return, Daniel must keep Elena away from the west foundation until Marianne comes back.

The remaining pages were blank.

Elena felt the ground shift beneath her.

“The west foundation.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That wing contains the old wine cellar.”

“And the sealed tunnel beneath it,” Elena said.

Gabriel had closed the tunnel during renovations, claiming the structure was unstable. Elena had not entered it since childhood.

Ortiz placed the birth certificate into an evidence sleeve.

“We should return to Bellweather with a search team.”

Elena looked at Adrian’s final line again.

Keep Elena away from the west foundation until Marianne comes back.

Marianne had come back.

Or someone using her identity had.

They returned to Bellweather shortly before sunset.

Mia was in the breakfast room with Rosa.

When Elena entered, Mia ran to hug her.

“Did Daddy leave you treasure?”

“More questions.”

“Questions can be treasure.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Where did you learn that?”

“The green-coat woman told me.”

Every adult in the room stopped moving.

Elena knelt.

“When?”

“Today.”

“Where?”

“In the garden.”

Rosa shook her head.

“I never left Mia alone.”

“She was by the fountain for less than a minute,” Mrs. Alvarez said. “I turned to answer the telephone.”

Elena held Mia’s shoulders.

“What did the woman say?”

“She said she was sorry she couldn’t stay.”

“Did she tell you her name?”

Mia nodded.

“Marianne?”

“No.”

Elena’s hands tightened.

“What name did she give you?”

“Catherine.”

Daniel and Ortiz exchanged a look.

Mia reached into her pocket and removed a brass object.

“She told me to give you this.”

It was not a key.

It was a small metal cylinder marked with the same Northstar emblem found on the property files.

Elena turned it in her fingers.

A thin section opened, revealing a rolled piece of paper.

On it was a hand-drawn map of Bellweather’s west foundation.

A red circle marked a chamber beneath the sealed tunnel.

Beneath the map, Catherine had written:

Gabriel did not buy Bellweather to own it.

He bought it to guard what I buried beneath it.

Adrian found the chamber.

That is why he died.

Elena looked toward the west wing.

A low vibration moved through the floor.

The chandelier trembled.

Then the mansion’s security alarm began to sound.

Hayes’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mrs. Vale, we have a breach in the old wine cellar.”

Ortiz drew her weapon and ordered the officers toward the west corridor.

Daniel pulled Elena and Mia back.

A second message appeared on the security monitor.

The camera inside the sealed tunnel had activated for the first time in twenty-one years.

A woman stood beneath the stone archway.

She wore a green coat.

Her face was older than Elena remembered, but the eyes were unmistakable.

Marianne.

Catherine.

Her mother.

She looked directly into the camera and lifted one finger to her lips.

Behind her stood a man Elena had believed was dead.

Thomas Reed, Gabriel Mercer’s former driver.

Thomas held Adrian’s missing recorder in one hand.

In the other, he held a recent photograph of Mia leaving school.

Marianne moved closer to the camera.

The speakers crackled.

“Elena, listen carefully,” she said. “Sarah’s forgery was only the invitation. Someone wanted the deed dispute to bring me back.”

Elena stepped toward the monitor.

“Mom?”

Marianne’s expression broke for one brief second.

Then she looked over her shoulder into the dark tunnel.

“They are already inside Bellweather.”

The video feed shook.

A shadow passed behind Thomas.

Marianne reached toward the camera.

“Do not trust Daniel.”

The screen went black.

Elena turned slowly.

Daniel was no longer standing beside her.

The front doors of Bellweather Mansion were open.

May you like

His car was gone.

And on the floor where he had been standing lay the black vault key, covered in fresh blood.
