Chapter 4 - david's final gift

The private investment account explained Austin’s desperation.
David had owned a small share in a logistics company. The company had recently been sold, and Theresa’s portion was worth nearly four million dollars.
Austin had discovered the account while handling funeral paperwork.
He had not told her.
Instead, he planned to gain control of the money, mortgage the house, and invest everything through a company registered in Chloe’s name.
Miriam traced that company to a condominium deposit, unpaid loans, and a failed restaurant venture Austin had hidden.
“He is drowning in debt,” she said. “He thinks your assets are his rescue.”
Theresa remembered Austin at twelve, holding a handmade Mother’s Day card. She wondered when love had turned into entitlement.
“Can the money be protected?”
“It already is. David placed it in a trust naming you as the sole beneficiary.”
A painful laugh escaped Theresa. David had protected her even after death.
Miriam suggested new accounts and a new estate plan. Theresa agreed. Then she made one additional decision.
She booked a year-long world cruise.
The trip had been David’s dream. They postponed it for decades because work, school, illness, and responsibility always seemed more urgent than joy.
Theresa chose a balcony cabin and paid in full.
When the confirmation arrived, she placed it inside David’s old travel journal.
For the first time since the funeral, she imagined waking somewhere other than the house where everyone expected her to disappear quietly.
That evening, Chloe measured the dining room windows for new curtains.
“We are brightening the place,” Chloe said.
Theresa looked at the room David had painted by hand.
“No,” she replied. “You are not.”
Chloe blinked.

It was the first time Theresa refused her.
It would not be the last.
