Chapter 3 - the locked cabinet

Theresa collected evidence with the patience of someone who had spent forty years keeping a family together.

She photographed opened mail, copied messages Austin sent from her phone, and recorded every time Chloe called the house “our property.”

The locked filing cabinet in the guest room bothered her most.

One afternoon, Chloe left for a salon appointment and Austin met a realtor. A locksmith Miriam trusted opened the cabinet in three minutes.

Inside were copies of Theresa’s bank records, a draft sales contract, and an email in which Austin promised an investor the property would be available before the end of the year.

There was also a forged medical letter describing Theresa as confused, unstable, and unable to manage her own affairs.

At the bottom was the name of a doctor she had never met.

Her knees weakened.

Miriam arrived twenty minutes later.

“They are building a case to control you,” she said.

Theresa stared at the false letter. “My own son.”

“Yes.”

The legal strategy had to be careful. They would revoke every fraudulent authority, alert the bank, notify the title company, and seek an emergency order blocking any transfer. But Miriam wanted Austin to believe his plan remained hidden.

“What do you need me to do?” Theresa asked.

“Let him think you still depend on him.”

That evening, Theresa cooked his favorite meal. He barely thanked her. Chloe complained about the salt.

Theresa smiled, cleared the dishes, and listened while they discussed renovating the kitchen after she moved into “a peaceful senior community.”

They thought silence meant surrender.

They did not know Theresa was memorizing every word.
