Chapter 9 - The Family Meeting
Two weeks later, Claire agreed to one final family meeting.
It took place in a conference room at Aurora’s Miami headquarters. Claire sat at the head of the table with her attorney beside her.
Vanessa entered first, wearing dark glasses and carrying a folder of printed articles about the canceled wedding. Her parents followed.
Vanessa removed her glasses.
“Do you know what people are saying about me?”
Claire remained calm. “I know what happened.”
“My reputation is destroyed.”
“Your own behavior was witnessed by one hundred and forty people.”
Vanessa pushed the articles across the table.
“You need to release a statement saying the cancellation was caused by a technical emergency.”
“No.”
Their mother leaned forward.
“We have all suffered enough.”
Claire’s attorney placed the forged financial authorization on the screen.
“The company has not yet filed a criminal complaint,” he said. “Ms. Bennett agreed to consider a private resolution.”
Hope appeared on her father’s face.
Claire explained the terms.
Her parents would repay every unauthorized expense by selling the vacation property Claire had helped them purchase. They would sign an admission of responsibility. They would lose access to all Aurora properties, accounts, and services.
Vanessa would repay the personal purchases charged to the wedding budget. She would also provide a written apology to Lily without excuses, demands, or requests for forgiveness.
Vanessa stared at Claire.
“You are choosing money over your sister.”
“No. I am choosing accountability over manipulation.”
Their father objected. “The property is part of our retirement.”
“You risked it when you forged my signature.”
Her mother began crying.
In the past, those tears would have weakened Claire.
This time, she remembered Lily being ordered to kneel in the sand.
“You may accept the agreement,” Claire said, “or my company may pursue the matter formally.”
After a long silence, her father signed.
Her mother followed.
Vanessa held the pen last.
“I hate you,” she whispered.
Claire met her eyes.
“You hated me when I was helping you. The difference is that helping you no longer costs me my daughter’s safety.”
Vanessa signed.
The family meeting ended without reconciliation.
