Chapter 8 - The Truth Nathan Discovered

The following morning, Nathan asked to speak with Claire.

They met on a quiet terrace overlooking the ocean. He looked exhausted, still wearing the shirt from his wedding suit.

“I owe you and Lily an apology,” he said.

“You did not spill the drink or demand that she kneel.”

“I ignored warning signs.”

Nathan explained that Vanessa had lied about more than the island. She claimed to direct several charitable organizations that were actually managed by unpaid volunteers. She told his family she had invested in Aurora Hospitality. She even suggested Claire depended on her financially.

Claire was not surprised.

Nathan placed a folder on the table.

“Last night, my father’s attorney reviewed the prenuptial documents Vanessa gave me. She listed this island as a future family asset.”

Claire opened the folder.

Vanessa had represented Marisol as property she expected to inherit from her parents.

“This is absurd,” Claire said.

“She wanted me to sign an agreement giving her access to one of my family’s development companies after the marriage.”

Claire understood the plan.

Vanessa had used Claire’s island to create the appearance of wealth. Once married, she intended to leverage Nathan’s family connections and perhaps continue borrowing against assets she did not own.

“What will you do?” Claire asked.

“The wedding is over. So is the relationship.”

He paused.

“I should have spoken when she insulted Lily.”

“Yes,” Claire said. “You should have.”

Nathan accepted the answer without defending himself.

Before leaving, he asked whether he could send Lily a written apology.

Claire agreed, provided there was no pressure for a response.

Later that afternoon, Lily read the note.

Nathan had written that adults were responsible for protecting children and that he was sorry he had failed to act quickly enough.

Lily folded the paper.

“Is Aunt Vanessa still angry at me?”

“Probably,” Claire said gently.

“Did I ruin the wedding?”

Claire took her daughter’s hands.

“No. You spilled a drink. Vanessa ruined her wedding by showing everyone who she was.”

Lily thought about this.

Then she nodded.

For Claire, that small nod mattered more than every apology her family had never given.
