Chapter 6 - Room 412

Daniel’s condition worsened quickly.
Clara received calls from the hospital, from Richard, and finally from Evelyn.
She ignored the first six.
On the seventh call, Evelyn left a voice message.
“Clara, whatever happened before, Daniel should not be punished for it. The doctors need to test you. Please come home.”
Clara listened twice.
There was no apology.
No mention of Lily.
Only a demand disguised as a plea.
Clara contacted Daniel’s doctor herself. The doctor explained that testing was voluntary and that Clara had no obligation to donate. She could complete initial screening without making a commitment.
Clara agreed to be tested.
Not for Evelyn.
Not for Richard.
For the brother who had once carried her home.
The results showed that she was a strong potential match.
Evelyn began speaking as though the donation were already decided.
She told relatives Clara was “saving her brother.” She sent Clara hospital schedules and instructions. She even contacted Clara’s employer to discuss possible leave.
Clara canceled the procedure consultation.
Then she arranged to meet her parents outside room 412.
Evelyn arrived wearing burgundy, the color she wore whenever she wanted to appear powerful. Richard stood behind her, pale and silent.
Daniel watched from behind the isolation-room glass.
The nurse held the consent form.
Clara asked one question.
“Did Daniel know the house was purchased with trust money intended for Lily’s medical care?”
Evelyn looked offended.
“This is not the time.”
“It is the only question.”
Richard whispered, “No.”
Evelyn turned on him.
“Richard.”
“He didn’t know,” Richard repeated.
Daniel’s expression changed behind the glass.
Clara lifted the folder Richard had given her.
“I have the records.”
Evelyn’s face lost its color.
“You have no idea how complicated family finances are.”
“One hundred and twenty thousand dollars was taken from a medical trust.”
“It was also an education trust.”
“Daniel was twenty-nine. He was not being educated. He was given a house.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Sign the form.”
Clara looked at the blank line where her name was supposed to go.
“No.”
That was when Evelyn dropped to her knees.
That was when Richard lowered his head.

That was when the past collided with the present beneath the bright hospital lights.
And that was when Clara told them to ask the house.
