Chapter 3 - The Photograph

Three weeks after Evelyn and Richard claimed they had no money, Daniel posted a photograph online.

He stood on the front porch of a newly renovated house, holding a silver key above his head.

Behind him were wide windows, a stone driveway, and a red ribbon stretched across the entrance.

The caption read, Best parents in the world. Couldn’t have done this without them.

Clara saw the photograph while sitting beside Lily’s hospital bed.

For several seconds, she could not understand what she was looking at.

Then she called Daniel.

He answered cheerfully.

“Hey, Clara. How’s Lily?”

“What house are you standing in?”

There was a pause.

“My house.”

“You bought a house?”

“Mom and Dad helped.”

“How much did they help?”

“Why?”

“Tell me.”

Daniel’s voice lost its excitement.

“They covered the down payment and most of the renovation.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know the exact total.”

“Ask them.”

“Clara, what’s happening?”

She ended the call and drove to her parents’ house that evening.

Evelyn opened the door but did not invite her inside.

“You bought Daniel a house.”

“We helped him establish a future.”

“While Lily was in the hospital.”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“Those arrangements were made before you came to us.”

“You could have changed them.”

“It was an investment.”

“My daughter’s treatment was an investment in her life.”

Richard appeared behind Evelyn.

“Please lower your voice.”

“How much did you give him?”

Neither answered.

Clara stepped closer.

“How much?”

Richard’s silence lasted long enough to become a confession.

“One hundred and forty thousand,” he finally said.

The number seemed to remove the air from the doorway.

Clara stared at him.

“You gave him one hundred and forty thousand dollars.”

“It wasn’t all cash,” Evelyn said. “Some of it covered renovations and legal costs.”

Clara laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“I needed sixty-eight thousand.”

“We made a commitment to Daniel,” Evelyn replied.

“You made a commitment to Lily when she was born.”

Evelyn’s eyes became cold.

“Daniel has always struggled. He needed stability.”

“And Lily needed treatment.”

“Doctors never guarantee outcomes.”

Clara flinched.

Richard whispered Evelyn’s name, but she continued.

“We could not risk everything on something uncertain.”

Clara looked from her mother to her father.

There were betrayals that arrived like explosions. This one arrived with polished floors, new windows, and a ribbon across a front porch.

She removed the spare key to her parents’ house from her key ring.

She placed it in Evelyn’s hand.

“Do not visit Lily.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Clara, don’t say that.”

“You made your choice.”

As she walked away, Evelyn called after her.

“You will regret separating Lily from her family.”

Clara stopped beside her empty parking space, remembering that she had already sold her car.

May you like

She looked back at them.

“No. You separated yourselves.”
