Chapter 1 - The Daughter Who Always Fixed Everything
Three months earlier, Millie Miller had been sitting in her office when her mother called.
Millie was thirty-two and worked as a financial systems consultant in Boston. She specialized in finding hidden expenses inside large corporate budgets, though her own family believed she merely helped people with computers.
That misunderstanding had once bothered her.
Eventually, she realized they preferred misunderstanding her. It made asking for money easier.
Her mother’s voice sounded unusually gentle.
“I’m finally retiring in August.”
“That’s wonderful, Mom.”
“I thought we could take one special family trip. Something none of us will ever forget.”
Millie leaned back in her chair.
For most of her childhood, family celebrations had revolved around Vanessa. Vanessa’s birthdays had required decorated halls and professional photographers. Millie’s birthdays usually ended with her helping clean the kitchen.
Still, she wanted to believe retirement might soften her mother.
“What kind of trip?”
“A cruise,” her mother said. “Seven days. Ocean views, formal dinners, tropical islands. Everyone together.”
Millie smiled despite herself.
“That sounds nice.”
“There’s only one problem.”
There was always one problem.
Her parents could afford the basic cruise, but they wanted adjoining balcony suites. Her father wanted premium dining. Vanessa wanted spa treatments, private excursions, and professional photographs. Her aunt and two cousins had also been invited.
“We don’t expect you to pay for everything,” her mother said quickly. “Just help us reserve it. We’ll reimburse you.”
Millie knew that promise was unreliable. Yet her mother added one final sentence.
“I want my two daughters beside me when we celebrate.”
That sentence reached the part of Millie that had spent decades waiting to be chosen.
She agreed.
By the end of the week, she had reserved the ship’s penthouse for herself and upgraded the rest of the family to balcony cabins. She added premium dining, spa access, beverage packages, private airport transportation, and three island excursions.
The total was more than she had planned to spend.
