All Personnel, Salute Her! / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Falcon-07

“Say your little call sign, princess,” Vivian repeated.

Her voice carried across the ballroom.

A few people chuckled.

Natalie crossed her arms.

Claire felt the familiar pressure to stay silent.

Silence had protected classified information. It had protected operations, colleagues and families who would never know her name.

But silence had also allowed Vivian and Natalie to create their own version of her life.

In that version, Claire was weak because she did not boast.

She was unsuccessful because she did not explain.

She was insignificant because her victories belonged to no audience.

Claire slowly turned away from her mother.

Her eyes found General Reed standing in the center of the hall.

He had stopped moving.

Claire straightened her posture.

For a brief moment, she was no longer surrounded by chandeliers and white tablecloths.

She was back in the dark operations center, hearing the voices of trapped people through broken radio signals.

She remembered the children boarding the transport aircraft.

She remembered the exhausted soldiers refusing to leave until the civilians were safe.

She remembered her father’s words.

Be the one people can trust.

Claire stood at attention.

“Falcon-07.”

General Reed’s glass fell.

It struck the floor and shattered.

All laughter stopped.

Reed walked toward her, his eyes fixed on the officer he had once believed might never return from the valley.

“F-Falcon-07,” he said.

Claire gave a small nod.

“Yes, sir.”

Reed raised his hand in salute.

“All personnel, salute her!”

The officers rose as one.

Natalie’s face lost its color.

Vivian looked around as though the entire room had betrayed her.

General Reed faced the guests.

“Colonel Hart led Operation Night Lantern. Her decisions saved one hundred and forty-three people, including thirty-two children and forty-one members of our armed forces.”

One officer near the stage stepped forward.

“I was on the final transport,” he said.

Another voice followed.

“My medical team was in that convoy.”

Then another.

“My brother came home because of her.”

Claire’s secret was no longer a source of ridicule.

It had become a room full of living witnesses.
