Chapter 1 - The Daughter Who Never Shone

Forty-eight hours earlier, Claire Hart stood alone in her small apartment in Arlington, staring at the invitation on her kitchen counter.

The envelope was thick and cream-colored, decorated with a gold military seal. It invited her to the annual National Defense Leadership Banquet in Washington.

Claire had attended formal military events before, but this invitation was different.

Her mother would be there.

Vivian Hart had spent most of her life moving through elegant rooms as though they belonged to her. She had married Claire’s father when he was a young officer and had remained active in military social circles even after his death.

To Vivian, reputation was everything.

Claire had never fit the image her mother wanted.

She had been quiet as a child, uncomfortable at parties and uninterested in expensive dresses. Natalie, her younger sister, had been the opposite. Natalie knew how to charm adults, collect compliments and make every family gathering revolve around her.

Vivian called Natalie her “bright star.”

Claire was usually described as “difficult,” “cold” or “strangely serious.”

When Claire joined the military at twenty-two, her mother had laughed.

“You?” Vivian had said. “You cannot even speak confidently at dinner.”

Claire did not tell her that courage did not always sound loud.

Over the next twelve years, Claire trained, served overseas and accepted assignments she was forbidden to discuss. Her family saw only missed holidays, short phone calls and long periods of silence.

Vivian decided the silence meant failure.

Natalie encouraged that belief.

Whenever Claire returned home, Natalie asked questions designed to embarrass her.

“Still doing paperwork?”

“Still hiding behind a desk?”

“Do they even trust you with anything important?”

Claire never defended herself.

Her missions were classified, and the people she had protected mattered more than her pride.

She picked up the banquet invitation and considered throwing it away.

Then she noticed a handwritten message at the bottom.

Attendance requested by the Office of General Marcus Reed.

Claire had not seen Reed since the night Operation Night Lantern ended.

She placed the invitation back on the counter.

For the first time in six years, Falcon-07 would enter a room where someone knew exactly who she was.
