Chapter 11: The Moment After

After Nathan said, “I heard everything,” the room became strangely quiet.
Vanessa’s fear lasted only a second before survival replaced it.
She rushed toward him.
“Nathan, she provoked me,” she cried. “Your mother has been trying to destroy our marriage from the beginning.”
Nathan stepped back.
That small movement hurt her more than shouting would have.
“Don’t,” he said.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked to Margaret, who sat trembling in the chair. “She lies. She always lies.”
Nathan held up the phone.
Vanessa’s own voice filled the room again.
“If you don’t sign, I will make sure Nathan believes you hurt me again.”
The words seemed to hang in the air like smoke.
Vanessa’s face changed.
She looked, for one brief moment, like a stranger caught wearing someone else’s skin.
Margaret whispered, “Nathan…”
He knelt beside her. “I’m here.”
“I didn’t want you to suffer.”
His eyes filled. “You were the one suffering.”
Clara appeared in the doorway, drawn by the noise. Behind her stood two staff members. They all saw Margaret, the fallen trophies, Vanessa’s pale face, and Nathan’s phone.
No one spoke.
Vanessa straightened suddenly.
“You recorded me without telling me?” she said, trying to sound offended.
Nathan looked at her as if he no longer recognized her.
“You pushed my mother into a cabinet.”
“She is fine.”
“That is not your defense.”
Vanessa turned toward the staff. “Get out. All of you.”
No one moved.
For months, they had lowered their eyes when Vanessa entered a room. Now they looked directly at her.
Nathan stood.
“Clara, please call Dr. Whitman to examine my mother. Then call Samuel Price.”
Vanessa swallowed. “Samuel?”
“My attorney.”
“Nathan, don’t be dramatic.”
May you like
He looked at the blinking device on the carpet.
“You were counting on my silence,” he said. “You should have feared my memory.”
