Chapter 10: The Trap Vanessa Built Herself

For three days, the device recorded ordinary sounds.

Footsteps.

Staff cleaning.

Margaret humming softly near the cabinet.

Vanessa speaking politely when others were present.

Nathan almost wanted to remove it.

Then, on the fourth day, Vanessa made a mistake.

Nathan was supposed to leave for Boston.

Vanessa watched him step into the car, kissed him goodbye, and waved from the front steps like a perfect wife.

But Nathan did not go to Boston.

He drove to the airport, checked in, then quietly changed his flight to the next morning. After a call from Samuel, he returned to town and waited at a hotel twenty minutes away, phone connected to the hidden device.

At first, there was silence.

Then Margaret’s cane tapped across the living room floor.

A cabinet door opened.

Margaret’s voice whispered, “William, give me strength.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Then heels clicked.

Vanessa.

“What are you doing in here?” she asked.

“I wanted to see the trophies.”

“You mean you wanted to snoop.”

“This is my home.”

“No,” Vanessa said coldly. “This is the home you are about to lose.”

Nathan sat upright in the hotel chair.

The phone in his hand captured every word.

Vanessa spoke for twelve minutes.

She told Margaret the doctor would sign the evaluation. She told her Nathan was exhausted by her. She told her the care residence had beautiful gardens, as if kindness could make a cage less cruel.

Margaret refused.

Then Vanessa’s voice changed.

“If you don’t sign,” she said, “I will make sure Nathan believes you hurt me again.”

Nathan grabbed his keys and ran.

By the time he reached the manor, the argument had moved into the west living room.

He entered through the side door, phone in hand, recording still active.

He heard his mother say, “Please, Vanessa. Don’t do this.”

Then came the shove.

The cabinet rattled.

The trophy fell.

The hidden device slid into the open.

And Vanessa finally saw the one witness she could not threaten.
