YOUR FAMILY, YOUR PROBLEM / Chapter 2 / 9

Chapter 2 - The Dead Woman’s Signature

The two investigators entered the private office without introducing themselves to Daniel’s family.

The first was a woman in her early fifties with silver at her temples and a voice that carried quiet authority.

“Mrs. Claire Whitaker?”

Claire nodded.

“I’m Special Agent Lena Ortiz with the Financial Crimes Division. This is Investigator Samuel Price from the state attorney general’s office.”

Samuel placed the sealed evidence bag beside Naomi’s folder.

“We need to ask questions about an account opened under your name,” Lena said. “Before we begin, are you aware that your late mother, Evelyn Marlowe, was listed as the authorized representative?”

“No,” Claire answered. “My mother never had authority over my accounts.”

Daniel leaned forward. “Then someone made an error.”

Lena looked at him. “And you are?”

“Her husband.”

“Name?”

“Daniel Whitaker.”

Lena wrote it down, although Claire suspected she already knew.

Harold cleared his throat. “Our family came here about a mortgage payment. I don’t see why government investigators are involved.”

Samuel’s expression did not change. “You will.”

Margaret began crying again. “We’ve done nothing wrong.”

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

For years, Margaret’s tears had controlled every room. She cried when questioned, when denied, and when expected to explain herself. The tears usually brought Daniel rushing to protect her.

This time Daniel remained silent.

Lena opened a thin file. “Mrs. Whitaker, was your mother alive on March 8, four years ago?”

“No. She died almost two years before that date.”

“Did anyone have access to her identification documents after her death?”

Claire remembered the weeks following the funeral. She had been overwhelmed by grief and business obligations. Daniel had offered to clear her mother’s apartment and handle the paperwork.

“He did,” Claire said, looking at him.

Daniel’s eyes hardened. “Because you asked me to help.”

“I asked you to close her utility accounts. I didn’t ask you to keep her passport.”

“I didn’t keep anything.”

Samuel opened the evidence bag and removed a photocopy.

It was Evelyn Marlowe’s passport.

The image showed Claire’s mother at sixty-two, wearing the blue scarf Claire had given her for Christmas. A note had been written in black ink across the copy.

Certified for financial authorization.

The certification was signed by a notary named Peter Lawson.

Lena turned to Daniel. “Do you know Mr. Lawson?”

“No.”

Vanessa suddenly shifted in her chair.

Claire noticed.

So did Samuel.

“Ms. Whitaker,” he said to Vanessa, “do you know him?”

Vanessa shook her head too quickly. “I don’t think so.”

“You don’t think so?”

“He may have handled paperwork for my townhouse. I meet lots of people.”

Claire stared at her. “Your townhouse?”

Vanessa looked down.

Naomi placed another bank record beside the passport copy. “The false account used your townhouse as its correspondence address for fourteen months.”

Margaret reached for Vanessa’s arm.

Vanessa pulled away.

Daniel spoke before anyone else could. “My sister probably received mail without knowing what it was.”

“Then why did she deposit checks from the account?” Naomi asked.

The room became silent.

Naomi turned a statement toward them. Three checks were highlighted.

Each was payable to Vanessa Whitaker.

Each carried Claire’s forged signature.

The total was one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.

Vanessa’s distress vanished beneath anger.

“You said those were family distributions,” she told Daniel.

Daniel stared at her. “Don’t.”

“You said Claire approved them.”

“Stop talking.”

Claire watched them as years of carefully maintained lies began to collide.

Harold stood. “This meeting is over.”

Lena remained seated. “You are free to leave. But the bank has preserved the records, and additional warrants are being prepared.”

Harold sat down again.

Claire asked the question no one wanted spoken.

“What was the account used for?”

Naomi gave her a printed summary.

Mortgage payments for Margaret and Harold.

Vanessa’s townhouse deposit.

A luxury vehicle leased to Daniel.

Private school tuition for a child whose name Claire did not recognize.

Payments to HWM Property Services.

Payments to Whitaker Family Holdings.

Transfers to a company called Northstar Legacy Consulting.

And one recurring monthly transfer of eight thousand dollars to a woman named Rachel Cole.

Claire read the name twice.

Daniel looked away.

“Who is Rachel?” Claire asked.

No one answered.

Then Margaret whispered, “She has nothing to do with this.”

Claire raised her eyes.

“You know her.”

Margaret’s face revealed the truth before her words could hide it.

Lena closed the folder. “Mrs. Whitaker, the criminal investigation will take time. But I advise you to secure your personal and corporate assets today.”

“They’re already secured,” Claire said.

Daniel turned sharply. “What does that mean?”

“It means your company access was revoked this morning.”

“My company access?”

“My company.”

Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it. “You can’t remove the chief operations officer without board approval.”

“I received approval at seven forty-five.”

“From whom?”

“The board members you told me never paid attention.”

Daniel reached for his phone.

The screen showed no service inside the secure office.

Claire leaned back.

“For years, you made decisions because you believed I would never question you,” she said. “You confused my patience with blindness.”

Daniel stood again. “You’re destroying our marriage over paperwork you don’t understand.”

Claire looked at the account opened in her name, the dead woman’s passport, and the checks written to his sister.

“No,” she said. “I’m finally understanding it.”

At that moment, Samuel’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked directly at Daniel.

“Your office has been searched,” Samuel said.

Daniel’s face drained of color.

“They found a second phone in your desk.”

Claire saw fear enter her husband’s eyes for the first time.

Samuel ended the call.

“The phone contains messages with Rachel Cole.”

Margaret covered her face.

Claire turned toward her.

“Tell me who she is.”

May you like

Margaret lowered her hands.

“She’s Daniel’s wife.”
