Chapter 5 - The House Nathan Never Owned

After Clara entered the hospital room with security, Nathan attempted to recover his confidence.

He pointed toward the divorce folder.

“This is a private family matter.”

Clara did not look at the folder.

“Forgery and fraudulent property transfer are not private family matters.”

Vanessa moved toward the door.

One of the security officers blocked her path without touching her.

“I have a meeting,” she said.

Clara turned to the woman carrying the evidence case.

“Dr. Patel, would you explain what you found?”

Dr. Mira Patel was a forensic document examiner retained by the Carter trust. She placed enlarged copies of the two signatures on the cream table.

“The questioned signature was created using an outdated sample,” she said. “Several letter formations are identical beyond natural variation, which strongly suggests tracing or digital reproduction.”

Nathan folded his arms.

“This proves nothing about me.”

“No,” Clara said. “Your recorded statements may be more useful.”

Nathan looked toward the camera.

“You cannot record me without permission.”

“The hospital informed you at reception that the room was monitored. You signed the acknowledgment.”

Vanessa turned sharply toward him.

“You signed it?”

“I didn’t read every page.”

Emily almost laughed.

Nathan had built his reputation by accusing others of failing to read contracts.

Now his own carelessness had captured him admitting that he transferred the house and telling Emily she had nothing left.

Clara picked up the divorce folder.

“Where did these documents come from?”

“My attorney prepared them,” Nathan said.

“What attorney?”

Nathan hesitated.

Vanessa answered first.

“Daniel Price.”

Nathan looked at her.

Clara wrote down the name.

“Thank you.”

Vanessa realized her mistake too late.

Daniel Price was the same attorney listed as the organizer of VNR Holdings.

Clara opened another document.

“The company that supposedly received the Riverside property is owned entirely by Vanessa Reed.”

Nathan’s head turned.

“What?”

Vanessa’s face remained controlled.

“That is temporary.”

“You said it was ours.”

“I said the property would be protected.”

Nathan stepped away from her.

Emily watched the plan fracture.

Nathan had betrayed his wife for a woman who had been preparing to betray him.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“This is not the time.”

He pulled away.

“You put the company in your name?”

“Because Emily’s lawyers would search for anything connected to you.”

Clara looked at Emily.

“Would you like them removed?”

Emily studied Nathan.

Part of her wanted to ask why.

Why had eight years of marriage become less valuable than a townhouse he never owned? Why had he ignored the children they had wanted for so long? Why had he chosen the day of their birth to humiliate her?

But any answer he gave would be designed to protect himself.

“I have one question,” Emily said.

Nathan looked toward her.

“Did you know the signature was forged?”

He said nothing.

Emily’s eyes remained on his.

“If Vanessa arranged it without your knowledge, say that now.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Nathan looked between the two women.

He understood the choice.

Blame Vanessa, and he might reduce his own legal exposure.

Protect Vanessa, and he preserved the last piece of the fantasy he had built.

“I believed Emily signed it,” he said.

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

“You watched me place the document in the folder.”

“I never saw anyone forge anything.”

“You gave me the medical forms.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“That’s a lie.”

Vanessa laughed once in disbelief.

Emily closed her eyes.

The betrayal no longer hurt in the way she expected.

It was too small.

She had once imagined Nathan as a complicated man damaged by pressure and ambition. Now she saw him clearly. He would stand beside anyone while they were useful and step away the moment consequences arrived.

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

Security moved instantly.

“It’s only my phone,” she snapped.

Clara held out her hand.

“You may contact your attorney after investigators speak with you.”

“You can’t detain me.”

“No one is detaining you. But the officers outside have questions concerning a fraudulent filing.”

Vanessa looked toward Nathan.

“Tell them this was your plan.”

Nathan remained silent.

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“You promised me that house.”

Emily opened her eyes.

There it was.

Not affection.

Not loyalty.

A promise involving stolen property.

Nathan’s face was gray.

Emily turned toward Clara.

“Have them leave.”

As security escorted Nathan and Vanessa into the corridor, Nathan looked back at the bassinets for the first time.

Daniel was awake, moving one hand beneath his blanket.

Nathan took half a step toward him.

Emily’s voice stopped him.

“You don’t get to notice them now because you need something human to hide behind.”

Nathan stared at her.

“They are my sons.”

“They are not your defense.”

The door closed.

Emily’s strength disappeared with it.

She turned her face toward the window and began to cry.

May you like

Not because Nathan was gone.

Because she finally understood that the man she had loved might never have existed.
