YOU DON’T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE

Rebecca requested a meeting two weeks after the party.

Sarah advised Daniel not to meet her alone, so they gathered in Sarah’s conference room. Robert attended, along with Rebecca’s attorney.

Linda refused to come.

Rebecca looked different without the polished confidence she wore at family events. Her hair was tied back, and no jewelry circled her wrists.

She placed the broken bracelet on the table.

“I’m surrendering this as evidence.”

Sarah looked at her attorney.

“It should have been surrendered earlier.”

“I know.”

Rebecca turned toward Daniel.

“I need to tell you what happened before Lily entered the laundry room.”

Daniel remained silent.

“I moved the blue bag because Mom thought you would search the cabinet. Lily followed me. She asked whether the papers belonged to Emily.”

“We know that.”

“She said she was going to tell you. I grabbed her sleeve.”

Daniel’s hands tightened beneath the table.

Rebecca noticed.

“I did not intend to frighten her.”

“But you did.”

“Yes.”

“And then you locked her inside.”

Rebecca looked down.

“Mom locked the door.”

“You put her in the room.”

“Yes.”

Robert’s voice was rough.

“Why?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears, but Daniel felt no obligation to comfort her.

“Because I panicked. I had spent years believing the company was supposed to be mine. Mom kept telling me Dad would never recognize me as long as Daniel remained the possible heir.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I did not want the company.”

“That made it worse.”

“How?”

“You could walk away and still matter more than I did.”

“That was between you and Dad.”

“I know that now.”

Robert looked at his daughter.

“I never knew you felt that way.”

“You never asked.”

“I promoted you.”

“You praised my results, then compared every decision to what Daniel might have done.”

Robert absorbed the accusation.

“I was wrong to do that.”

Rebecca’s expression shifted with surprise.

“But your resentment did not give you the right to steal from Lily,” he continued.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca opened a folder.

“I am prepared to cooperate fully. I will admit that I helped obtain the false medical template. I will identify the person who created it. I will return everything purchased with money from the reserve account.”

Her attorney added, “In exchange, we hope the prosecutor will consider her cooperation.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Why now?”

She hesitated.

“Because Mom wants to blame everything on me.”

Robert leaned back.

“What?”

Rebecca placed printed messages on the table.

Linda had written that Rebecca manipulated her into changing the records. She claimed she did not understand the legal meaning of the transition documents and believed the medical letter was genuine.

“That is impossible,” Robert said.

“I know.”

Rebecca’s voice shook.

“She told me yesterday that a mother protects the family by sacrificing the child who causes the problem.”

The room went silent.

Daniel thought of Lily asking whether she needed to apologize.

Rebecca wiped her eyes.

“For years, I thought Mom protected me. She encouraged every resentment I had and told me I deserved more. But the moment there were consequences, I became useful in a different way.”

Daniel felt anger, but also a colder understanding.

Linda had trained both her children to compete for approval, then punished them whenever they became inconvenient.

Daniel had escaped by leaving.

Rebecca had stayed and become part of the system.

That explained her choices.

It did not excuse them.

“Have you apologized to Lily?” he asked.

“No. Sarah said I should not contact her.”

“That was correct.”

“I wrote a letter.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She nodded.

“You can decide whether to keep it.”

Rebecca slid the sealed envelope across the table.

“What does it say?” Daniel asked.

“That I did something wrong. That she did not cause it. That she does not need to forgive me.”

Daniel took the letter but did not promise to deliver it.

Rebecca glanced at the green bracelet.

“I bought that after my first major contract. Mom said the stones represented strength.”

She pushed it toward Sarah.

“Now it only reminds me of the moment I became someone I never wanted to be.”

The meeting ended without forgiveness.

Outside the conference room, Robert asked Daniel whether he believed Rebecca was sincere.

“I believe she is afraid,” Daniel replied.

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No. But fear can be the beginning of honesty if she stops using it as an excuse.”

Robert looked through the glass wall at his daughter.

“Will you ever let her see Lily again?”

“Not now.”

“Someday?”

“That depends on Rebecca. It also depends on Lily.”

Robert nodded.

For once, he did not argue for immediate reconciliation.

Three days later, Rebecca formally accepted responsibility for her role. She resigned from Carter Development, surrendered company property, and provided access to several hidden accounts.

Her cooperation exposed the full scale of Linda’s actions.

Linda had not merely redirected Emily’s dividends.

She had also altered insurance records, intercepted legal correspondence, and created a plan to sell company property after gaining control.

The supposed effort to preserve the family legacy was actually designed to give Linda permanent financial authority.

Robert filed for divorce.

When he informed Linda, she did not apologize.
