Chapter 4 - The Last Family Dinner

When I returned to the dining room, Daniel was telling his mother about the property sale.

He stopped when he saw the platter.

“At last.”

Vanessa frowned.

“That doesn’t look like a noodle bowl.”

“I prepared something special,” I said.

I placed the tray in front of Daniel.

Gloria inspected me with suspicion.

“What are you smiling about?”

I had not realized I was smiling.

Daniel reached for the lid.

“Here is your dinner,” I told him. “I hope you enjoy the surprise.”

He opened it.

The color drained from his face.

His eyes moved from the photograph to the bank records and then to the red silk garment.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What is that?”

Daniel covered the evidence with the lid.

“Nothing.”

I removed his hand.

“It’s everything.”

Gloria seized the photograph of Daniel and Sabrina outside the Royal Crest Hotel.

“You told me those payments were for investors.”

Daniel ignored her.

He stared at me.

“Where did you get these?”

“Your car. Your office. Your accounts. Your recorded conversations.”

Vanessa grabbed one of the statements.

Her name appeared beside transfers worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“You said these companies were legal.”

“They are,” Daniel snapped.

“No,” I said. “They were created to hide money stolen from my foundation.”

Vanessa turned on him.

“You told me I was only signing tax forms.”

“You knew exactly what you were signing.”

“I knew nothing.”

Gloria slapped the table.

“Stop arguing. Claire is bluffing.”

I slid the property deed toward her.

“This mansion was placed in a protected trust before I married Daniel. He never owned it.”

Gloria read the document twice.

“You let us live here.”

“I allowed you to live here.”

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

“You think you can humiliate me in my own home?”

“This was never your home.”

He reached for my wrist.

Before he touched me, the front doors opened.

The officers entered.

For once, Daniel could not talk his way out of what everyone had seen.

Detective Ortiz ordered him to step back. Agent Reed collected the documents from the platter while another officer informed Vanessa that she was being detained for questioning.

Gloria began shouting that she was an elderly woman being persecuted by an ungrateful daughter-in-law.

Detective Ortiz played a recording from her phone.

Gloria’s own voice filled the dining room.

“A wife who cannot manage a simple meal needs to be broken by discipline.”

Gloria stopped shouting.

Daniel’s arrogance disappeared completely when Agent Reed listed the charges under investigation: fraud, forgery, conspiracy, theft, unlawful financial transfers, intimidation, and assault.

Sabrina Cole had also agreed to cooperate after discovering that Daniel had lied to her about the source of his money.

Daniel looked at the red garment on the tray.

“She gave you evidence?”

“She gave the task force account numbers, messages, and copies of the documents you asked her to destroy.”

His expression changed from anger to disbelief.

He had spent years manipulating women against one another.

Now the women he had underestimated were dismantling his lies together.

As the officers led him toward the entrance, Gloria called after him.

“Daniel, tell them I had nothing to do with the money.”

He looked over his shoulder.

“You wanted the house more than anyone.”

Vanessa pointed at her brother.

“This was his plan.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You signed every document.”

The Mercer family had entered the dining room as a united force.

They left accusing one another.

Evelyn remained beside me after the doors closed.

“Are you safe?” she asked.

I looked around the room.

The fallen chair.

The abandoned wineglasses.

May you like

The silver platter covered with the evidence that had ended my marriage.

“For the first time in two years,” I said, “yes.”
