CHAPTER 1: THE BRIDE THE WHOLE CITY ADMIRED

Three months before the wedding, Clara Whitmore had believed Ethan Vale was the most perfect man who had ever entered her life.
Clara was the only daughter of Richard Whitmore, the owner of an old hotel chain and a major charity foundation in Boston. Her family was wealthy, but her father had never raised her to be an arrogant heiress. He taught her how to lower herself when speaking to employees, how to listen to the vulnerable, and how to use money to protect those who had no voice.
After her mother passed away, Clara had only her father left.
Then Richard suddenly fell ill.
During the days when Clara almost collapsed in the hospital corridors, Ethan appeared. He was the son of the Vale family, longtime business partners of the Whitmores. Ethan was elegant, composed, and always knew exactly what to say to make Clara feel less alone.
He spoke to the doctors for her.
He handled the press for her.
He kept distant relatives away when they came asking about inheritance and shares.
And whenever Clara was exhausted, Ethan would hold her hand and say:
“You don’t have to be strong alone. I’ll protect you.”
Clara believed him.
Not because she was naive.
But because at that time, she was too tired to doubt someone who stood beside her during the darkest moment of her life.
The city believed in that story too.
A young heiress who had lost her mother and whose father was seriously ill.
A charming rich man who stayed by her side.
A grand wedding that the media called “a fairytale ending.”
But there was one person who did not believe Ethan.
Noah Bennett.
Noah was the son of the former housekeeper who had worked for the Whitmore family for many years. He and Clara had grown up together in the garden behind the Whitmore mansion. When they were children, whenever Clara broke a vase or dirtied her dress, Noah was always the one who took the blame for her.
Later, Noah left Boston to study hospitality management. He was not rich, not famous, and did not belong to Ethan’s glittering world. But he understood Clara better than anyone else.
When Noah heard that Clara was engaged, he called her.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
Clara was silent for a few seconds.
“Ethan was there for me when everything was at its worst.”
Noah answered quietly:
“Being there when you’re weakest doesn’t always mean he loves you. Sometimes, that’s when people can control you most easily.”
Clara was angry.
She hung up.
Not because she hated Noah.
But because his words had touched the exact fear she did not dare to face.
After that call, Ethan began mentioning Noah in a suspicious tone.
“He showed up right when you were about to get married. Don’t you think that’s strange?”
Bit by bit, Ethan made Clara distance herself from Noah.

Bit by bit, he made her believe that everyone around her could take advantage of her.
Everyone except him.
