Chapter Four: Her Father’s Last Letter

Samuel did not open the second envelope immediately.

He looked at Paige first.

“Miss Paige, this part is personal. We can continue privately.”

Vivian moved quickly.

“Yes,” she said. “Excellent idea. The guests should leave. This has become inappropriate.”

Paige glanced around the room.

The same people who had stayed silent during her humiliation now looked hungry for the truth. They had not defended her, but they wanted to watch Vivian fall.

Paige realized something painful then.

Most people were not loyal to kindness or cruelty.

They were loyal to safety.

They sided with whoever seemed strongest.

A few minutes ago, that had been Vivian.

Now they were waiting to see if it would be Paige.

Paige turned back to Samuel.

“My father wanted the truth opened if she tried to throw me out,” she said.

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then open it here.”

Vivian’s eyes widened.

“Paige—”

“No,” Paige said, her voice calm. “You wanted an audience when you slapped me. You can have one now.”

A few guests looked down in shame.

Samuel opened the second envelope.

Inside was a letter and a small digital drive sealed in a plastic sleeve. He handed the letter to Paige.

The handwriting made her chest ache.

My dearest Paige,

If you are reading this in front of others, then I was right to be afraid.

Paige’s eyes blurred instantly.

She pressed her lips together and kept reading.

I hope I am wrong. I hope Vivian treats you with dignity after I am gone. I hope the people around us remember who you are and protect you when I cannot.

But if she tries to remove you from your home, then you must know the truth.

Paige’s hands began to tremble.

For months, I suspected that Vivian was preparing to take control of the estate by isolating you and challenging your inheritance. I discovered financial transfers, forged communications, and attempts to influence my medical care.

A shocked sound moved through the room.

Vivian snapped, “This is a lie!”

Samuel’s voice cut in.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I advise you not to interrupt.”

Paige kept reading.

I did not want to burden you while you were studying, and for that I am sorry. I thought I could handle it quietly. I changed my will, secured the company shares, and collected evidence with Samuel’s help.

Paige stopped.

Her father had been fighting alone.

All those nights in his study.

All those tired smiles.

He had been protecting her.

She forced herself to continue.

If Vivian acts with kindness, let the settlement stand. Let her leave with dignity.

But if she harms you, humiliates you, or tries to steal what your mother and I built for you, then Samuel is authorized to release everything to the court, the board, and the authorities.

Paige heard Vivian inhale sharply.

The final lines were harder to read.

Paige, this house is not valuable because of its walls. It is valuable because your mother laughed here. Because you grew up here. Because love lived here before ambition poisoned it.

Do not let anyone convince you that grief makes you weak.

You are my daughter.

Stand up.

Come home.

Forever,
Dad

Paige lowered the letter.

For a moment, she forgot everyone else existed.

She could almost feel her father beside her. Not alive, not close enough to touch, but present in the only way he could still be: through the truth he had left behind.

Then Vivian spoke.

Her voice was no longer smooth.

“You are all being manipulated by a dead man’s paranoia.”

Samuel placed the digital drive on the table.

“This contains copies of bank records, security footage logs, emails, and phone recordings legally obtained by Mr. Whitmore during his lifetime.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“You cannot prove anything.”

Samuel looked at her.

“We can prove enough.”

Paige turned slowly toward Vivian.

“What did you do?”

Vivian lifted her chin.

“I took care of your father while you were away playing student.”

Paige flinched, but did not step back.

Samuel removed another paper.

“Mr. Whitmore’s private physician documented concerns that his medication schedule had been altered without approval.”

The room went deathly silent.

Vivian’s lips parted.

“I never—”

“No accusation is being made in this room as a court finding,” Samuel said carefully. “But there is sufficient evidence for investigation.”

Paige stared at Vivian.

All the small memories returned at once.

Vivian insisting her father was too tired for calls.

Vivian saying the doctor had changed his medicine.

Vivian telling Paige not to come home during finals because Jonathan needed rest.

Paige had believed her.

Or maybe she had wanted to believe her.

Because the alternative was unbearable.

“Did you keep me away from him?” Paige asked.

Vivian did not answer.

Paige stepped closer.

“Did he ask for me?”

Vivian’s eyes flickered.

That was enough.

Paige’s voice broke.

“He asked for me, didn’t he?”

For once, Vivian had no performance ready.

No graceful lie.

No cold insult.

May you like

Only silence.

And in that silence, Paige lost her father all over again.
