Chapter 15 - The Sister Who Had Been Watching

Richard fired.

Claire ducked as the bullet tore through the driver’s seat.

Vanessa pulled Noah behind the engine block.

Claire fired back, forcing Richard behind a tree.

Snow fell through the dark forest, covering footprints almost as quickly as they appeared.

“Who is the third girl?” Claire shouted.

Richard laughed.

“You met her on Easter.”

Claire’s mind raced through everyone who had entered the house.

Evelyn.

Officer Marquez.

The paramedics.

The security officers.

Richard moved between the trees.

“She has been closer to you than either of us planned.”

“Why would Jonathan write that there are three Vale daughters?”

“Because Jonathan never understood what Margaret did after the fire.”

A second vehicle approached along the mountain road.

Headlights swept through the forest.

Richard turned toward it.

That moment gave Claire an opening.

She fired at his rifle.

The weapon spun from his hands.

Vanessa ran forward and kicked it down the slope.

Richard raised both hands.

“You won’t kill me.”

Claire kept the gun trained on him.

“No.”

He smiled.

“You still need answers.”

“No. I need you alive long enough to give them in court.”

The approaching vehicle stopped.

Officer Marquez and several state police officers emerged.

Evelyn had transmitted their location before the vault signal disappeared. When her watch stopped responding, Marquez followed the last recorded route.

Richard was arrested.

Diane and the driver were captured near the crash.

Holt had escaped with the sample case and both chamber keys.

Noah was taken to a hospital and found physically unharmed.

Jonathan was found alive in the underground vault. The bullet had struck an old protective plate beneath his coat and deflected away from his heart. His injuries remained serious, but surgeons believed he would survive.

For three days, Claire waited at the Bellweather hospital.

Margaret stayed near Jonathan’s room but refused to explain the third daughter.

“She must choose to reveal herself,” Margaret said.

“She may be working with Holt.”

“She may be working against him.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“It is the only truth I have.”

Vanessa sat beside Noah as he slept.

The experience changed her in ways Claire could already see. She no longer demanded attention or blamed everyone around her. She watched her son breathe as though seeing him clearly for the first time.

“I’m going to testify,” Vanessa said.

“Against Richard and Diane?”

“Against everyone. Including myself.”

Claire looked at her.

“You did not know about Meridian.”

“I knew what they planned to do to you. I helped pressure you. I watched Dad hurt you.”

“You were conditioned.”

“That explains my choices. It doesn’t erase them.”

Claire reached for her hand.

It was the first time either sister had offered the other comfort without calculation.

They returned home under heavy protection.

The dining room had been cleaned, but Claire could still see a faint mark where the wine glass shattered.

She stood in the same place and touched the healing cut on her cheek.

Five minutes after her father threw the glass, her family’s lies began collapsing.

Yet the truth had become larger than the house.

The Meridian archive was distributed across protected servers, but the names remained encrypted. The eighteen-billion-dollar transfer had paused.

Holt possessed the keys.

Margaret’s voiceprint remained necessary.

And somewhere, a third woman carried Vale blood.

Claire entered the hidden corridor with Vanessa, Evelyn, Margaret, and Officer Marquez.

The chamber lights activated.

The console displayed three hand scanners.

There had only been two before.

Margaret looked unsurprised.

Claire turned toward her.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“Who is she?”

Margaret approached the console.

“After the fire, I found evidence that Meridian had used one of my embryos without consent. A third child was born several years after you.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“How old is she?”

“Approximately twenty-seven.”

“Who raised her?”

“Lydia arranged the placement.”

Claire thought of every younger woman connected to the investigation.

No answer felt possible.

Margaret placed her hand on the voice scanner.

The system asked her to speak.

She said, “My daughters have returned.”

The first two scanners illuminated beneath Claire and Vanessa’s hands.

The third remained dark.

A message appeared.

THIRD IDENTITY WITHIN RANGE.

Everyone looked around the chamber.

Someone nearby was the missing sister.

Officer Marquez stepped away from the console.

Evelyn did the same.

Margaret watched both women.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

A live video opened without her touching the screen.

Holt stood in an unfamiliar control room.

Behind him, dozens of monitors displayed Claire’s house from every angle.

He held the silver and gold keys.

“You opened the chamber too early,” he said.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“Where is my sister?”

Holt smiled.

“She is standing beside you.”

The video ended.

The chamber door locked.

The third scanner illuminated.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

A section of wall opened, revealing a narrow glass compartment.

Inside lay a file marked DAUGHTER THREE.

Claire reached for it.

Evelyn grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t.”

Claire stared at her.

“Why?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, Officer Marquez raised his weapon.

Not at Evelyn.

At Margaret.

Margaret slowly lifted both hands.

Vanessa moved in front of Noah’s empty chair as though he were still with her.

The console began a new countdown.

THIRD HEIR AUTHORIZATION ACTIVE.

ARCHIVE CONTROL WILL TRANSFER IN FIVE MINUTES.

Claire looked from Evelyn to Marquez.

One of them was her sister.

One of them might be Holt’s agent.

Perhaps both statements were true.

A voice came through the chamber speakers.

It belonged to the same woman Claire remembered from the white corridor.

“Celia,” the voice said, “choose which sister leaves the room.”

Claire felt the old conditioning tighten around her chest.

Margaret whispered, “Do not answer.”

Evelyn released Claire’s wrist.

Officer Marquez’s finger moved toward the trigger.

The glass compartment opened.

Inside the file was a recent photograph of the third daughter standing at Claire’s Easter dinner.

Claire turned the picture over.

A name had been written on the back.

Before she could read it aloud, the entire chamber went dark.

May you like

Someone whispered beside her.

“You should have let them take the house.”
