Chapter 11 - The Secret Lily Kept
Emily knelt in front of Lily.
“What did your father tell you?”
Lily held the recording device against her chest.
“It was before his accident. He came into my room after you went to sleep.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“He said someone might ask questions. He said I had to wait until Uncle Richard came home.”
Richard crouched beside them.
“You remembered me?”
Lily nodded.
“Daddy showed me your photograph.”
She switched on the recorder.
At first, there was only the rustle of blankets.
Then Michael’s voice filled the room.
“Lily, I need you to remember something important. None of this is your fault. Your sisters must never think it is their fault either.”
Lily’s younger voice answered.
“Are you going away?”
“For a little while.”
“Is Grandma making you?”
“No. I am trying to stop someone who has frightened our family for a very long time.”
“Mommy will be sad.”
“I know.”
“Why can’t you tell her?”
“Because your mother will fight for me. And if she fights too soon, the wrong person will know what we are doing.”
Michael paused.
“There is a man named Dominic. He believes your uncle Richard and I will never trust each other. I need him to keep believing that.”
“Is Uncle Richard bad?”
“No. I was wrong about him.”
“Then call him.”
“I tried. Someone controls the calls.”
Michael’s voice became quieter.
“If anything happens and Uncle Richard returns, give him this recording. But only after you hear the words Night Rose.”
The recording ended.
Emily stared at Lily.
“You heard us talking about Night Rose at the country house.”
Lily nodded.
“I was scared. I thought the security people might work for the bad man.”
Emily pulled her daughter into her arms.
“You should never have had to carry this.”
“Daddy said I was brave.”
“You are brave. But adults should not ask children to keep secrets this dangerous.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
“I know.”
Richard replayed the final section.
Michael had planned his disappearance before the crash. He believed Dominic was monitoring communication. He needed Dominic to think Emily and Richard remained unaware.
But the plan had failed.
Margaret forced Emily and the girls into the laundry room.
Their accounts were stolen.
Someone created the posthumous Continuity Assignment.
And Michael had not returned.
“He expected to be gone for a little while,” Emily said. “Something happened after he boarded the plane.”
Nora searched the pink recorder for additional files.
One had been created automatically several hours after Michael spoke with Lily. The device had continued recording beneath her pillow.
The audio captured voices in the corridor outside Lily’s room.
Margaret spoke first.
“Michael has taken the original partnership agreement.”
Julian answered.
“Dominic will assume Richard has it.”
“Then make sure Richard remains outside the country.”
“And Emily?”
“She knows nothing.”
A third voice joined them.
A man.
“He will still need a body.”
Margaret replied, “Daniel will handle it.”
The unknown man laughed.
“And what will you tell the widow?”
“The same thing women like Emily are always told. That everything important belongs to the family.”
Emily recognized the third voice.
It was the voice from the warehouse speaker.
Dominic had been inside Hartwell Manor the night before the crash.
The recording continued.
Footsteps approached Lily’s bedroom.
The handle moved.
Then Michael’s voice sounded from inside the room.
“She is asleep.”
Dominic replied from the corridor.
“You are making this more complicated than necessary.”
“I want Catherine released.”
“After you sign the agreement.”
“And after you return the girls’ trusts.”
Dominic laughed.
“Your daughters were born Hartwells. Their money was never truly theirs.”
Michael opened the door.
“You should not have come near my children.”
A brief struggle followed, but the recording captured no clear details.
Then Dominic said something that made Richard freeze.
“You sound just like Alexander before Margaret helped me bury him.”
The audio ended.
Their father’s official cause of death had been a heart attack.
Now Dominic was claiming Margaret helped conceal something else.
Nora immediately requested the complete medical file from Alexander Hartwell’s death.
The hospital responded that the original file had been destroyed in a records fire.
Only one document remained.
The death certificate had been signed by Daniel Reeve’s father.
