Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Door

The pounding on the front door shook the bathroom mirror.
Emily Carter sat trapped on the closed toilet seat, one arm wrapped around her pregnant belly and the other raised protectively over her face. A sharp, searing pain spread across her cheek, but fear kept her from touching it.
Sarah stood beside the sink, still holding the small white bottle.
Michael blocked the bathroom doorway.
Neither of them moved.
The pounding came again.
“Emily!” Ashley shouted from the hallway outside the apartment. “Open the door! The police are here!”
Michael’s smug expression vanished.
Sarah’s hand tightened around the bottle.
For one suspended second, the only sound in the room was Emily’s uneven breathing and the slow drip of liquid from the edge of the sink.
Then Michael lunged toward her.
“Don’t say a word,” he whispered.
Emily stared at him.
His face was the same face she had once loved. The same dark eyes. The same carefully trimmed beard. The same mouth that had promised to protect her in front of two hundred wedding guests.
But the man standing over her was no longer pretending.
He grabbed her shoulder.
Emily pressed both hands over her stomach.
“The yellow blanket,” she whispered again.
Michael froze.
Sarah turned toward him.
“What does that mean?” she asked.
Before he could answer, the apartment door crashed open.
Heavy footsteps thundered through the living room.
Michael stepped away from Emily and reached for the bathroom lock, but the door slammed inward before he could touch it.
Ashley Reed stood in the doorway, breathing hard. Rainwater darkened the shoulders of his gray jacket. A police officer stood behind him, one hand near his holstered weapon.
Ashley’s phone was already raised.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
Michael lifted both hands and forced a laugh.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
Ashley’s eyes moved from Emily’s face to the white bottle in Sarah’s hand.
His jaw tightened.
“It looks exactly like what you said you were going to do.”
Michael’s expression changed.
Ashley pressed PLAY.
Michael’s recorded voice echoed through the bathroom.
“If she refuses again, hold her down. She won’t be pretty enough to testify after tonight.”
The room fell silent.
The officer stepped forward.
“Put the bottle down.”
Sarah stared at the phone as though it had become a weapon.
“That recording is fake.”
Ashley did not look at her.
Another voice played from the phone.
Sarah’s voice.
“What about the baby?”
Michael answered.
“The baby is the reason she has to sign.”
Emily felt the child move inside her.
A small, desperate kick.
The officer ordered Michael to turn around.
Michael did not obey.
Instead, he looked at Emily.
Not with regret.
Not with fear.
With warning.
“You have no idea what you’ve done,” he said.
Ashley stepped between them.
“No,” Ashley replied. “You don’t.”
A second officer entered the bathroom and took the bottle from Sarah. She immediately began protesting.
“It was a cosmetic treatment. Emily asked for it.”
Emily tried to stand.
Her knees failed beneath her.
Ashley caught her before she hit the floor.
“I didn’t ask,” Emily said.
The words came out broken.
“I told them to stop.”
The first officer pulled Michael’s hands behind his back.
Metal handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
For the first time that night, Emily allowed herself to believe the nightmare might be ending.
Then Michael laughed.
It was quiet at first.
Almost breathless.
Ashley looked at him.
“What’s funny?”
Michael lifted his head.
“She thinks the recording will save her.”
His gaze returned to Emily’s stomach.
“She still doesn’t know who the baby belongs to.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Sarah’s panic disappeared.
A slow smile formed on her face.
Ashley looked from Michael to Emily.
“What is he talking about?”
Emily could not answer.
Because beneath the fear, beneath the pain and confusion, one thought had begun to rise.
May you like
The yellow blanket was no longer where she had hidden it.
And inside that blanket was the only evidence that could prove Michael had been lying since the day they met.
