Chapter 7 - The Guest Who Was Never Invited

Thomas Vale did not arrive like a criminal.
He arrived like a wedding guest.
At 10:23 the next morning, a black Mercedes stopped at Hawthorne Estate.
By then, everyone had made an extraordinary decision.
The wedding would continue.
Not normally.
Not exactly.
Sophia had chosen to proceed with the ceremony only if Lucas agreed to one condition.
No pretending.
No family lie.
No protecting Victoria.
Lucas agreed.
Victoria had returned to the mansion under advice from her newly hired attorney.
She was not formally charged.
Yet.
Marlene had disappeared sometime before sunrise.
Investigators were searching for her.
Emily stood inside Hawthorne’s bridal suite wearing a simple dark green dress Alexander’s assistant had brought that morning.
The original wedding schedule had been compressed.
Guests had been told there were “family complications.”
Rumors moved through the estate like electricity.
Then security called Alexander.
A man had arrived requesting Emily Carter.
Thomas Vale.
Emily went downstairs.
Alexander tried to stop her.
“You don’t need to speak to him.”
“I do.”
“Not alone.”
“I didn’t say alone.”
They met Thomas in a small receiving room with Detective Porter and Nathaniel Grant present.
Thomas was seventy-one.
Thin.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
His eyes went directly to Emily.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
“You look like Charles.”
Emily sat across from him.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“You managed my trust?”
“Yes.”
“You helped my mother steal from it?”
Thomas exhaled.
“That is more complicated.”
“No. It isn’t.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“Definitely Charles’s daughter.”
Alexander leaned against the wall.
Thomas glanced at him.
“So she married a Hale.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know that?”
Thomas looked back at her.
“I know more than you think.”
Porter spoke.
“You contacted us through counsel claiming you had evidence.”
Thomas placed a small metal key on the table.
“I do.”
“What does it open?” Emily asked.
“A deposit box.”
“Where?”
“First National.”
“What’s inside?”
“Your father’s original corporate records.”
Grant shifted.
“Why weren’t they produced during probate?”
“Because Charles believed Victoria would destroy them.”
Emily’s hands tightened.
Thomas continued.
“He discovered irregularities about a year before he died.”
“What kind?”
“Money moving out of Carter Family Holdings.”
Lucas, listening from the doorway, stepped inside.
“Out?”
Thomas nodded.
“Millions.”
Lucas looked confused.
“Our company was almost bankrupt.”
“That was the purpose.”
Emily stared.
“Someone deliberately drained it?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Victoria helped.”
The words landed hard.
“Helped who?”
Thomas did not immediately answer.
Detective Porter leaned forward.
“Mr. Vale.”
He looked toward the window.
Then said:
“A man named Adrian Cross.”
Alexander straightened.
For the first time, Emily saw genuine surprise on his face.
“You know him?” she asked.
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Thomas smiled without humor.
“Of course he does.”
“Who is Adrian Cross?”
Alexander answered slowly.
“He was my father’s business partner.”
Emily stared.
Thomas nodded.
“And the man Charles believed was trying to seize Carter Family Holdings through manufactured debt.”
Lucas sat down.
“This makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Thomas pushed the metal key toward Emily.
“Box 417.”
“Why give this to me now?”
His eyes changed.
“Because someone tried to kill me three weeks ago.”
The room went silent.
“And,” Thomas added, “because Charles left instructions.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
“What instructions?”
Thomas looked at Alexander.
Then back at her.
“If Emily ever finds the trust, tell her not to trust the person who helps her find it.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Nobody moved.
Alexander’s face became unreadable.
Emily stared at Thomas.
“What did you just say?”
Thomas repeated it.
Word for word.
“Your father wrote: If Emily ever finds the trust, tell her not to trust the person who helps her find it.”
May you like
Emily slowly turned toward her husband.
Alexander had found the trust.
