Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the Glass

Arthur survived surgery.

The bullet damaged his liver but missed his heart.

Doctors placed him under heavy sedation and warned the family that the next forty-eight hours would determine whether he recovered.

Police guarded the hospital floor.

Daniel remained in custody for financial fraud, obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and conspiracy connected to the Pier 17 smuggling operation.

Mason was questioned and released under supervision.

Rebecca disappeared before dawn.

She left the hospital through a service exit while Claire was speaking with detectives. Her phone and coat were found in a restroom.

No camera captured her departure.

Victor’s boat was discovered abandoned near an industrial marina fifteen miles north.

There was blood on the passenger seat.

No bodies were found.

Rachel had vanished again.

Eleanor refused police protection.

She remained near Arthur’s room, speaking little and watching every entrance.

Clara sat across from her.

The reunion between mother and daughter was not gentle.

Too many years stood between them.

Too many unanswered questions.

Claire stayed beside Arthur.

She watched the machines breathe and measure and warn.

The old man who had once controlled ships, banks, and politicians now depended on wires and transparent tubes.

Near midnight, Elias arrived in a wheelchair.

A bandage covered the side of his head.

“You should be in bed,” Claire said.

“So should you.”

He handed her a sealed envelope.

“What is this?”

“A letter Arthur gave me six months ago.”

“Why now?”

“He instructed me to deliver it if someone accessed the private vault using his identity.”

Claire opened the envelope.

Celeste,

If you are reading this, then the deepest part of the deception has begun.

The vault does not recognize only fingerprints and eyes.

It recognizes blood.

Years ago, I created a contingency system allowing any direct descendant to access certain emergency records.

I believed this would protect the family if I became incapacitated.

It may now destroy us.

Four people besides me possess the required blood connection.

Daniel.

Rachel.

Eleanor.

And you.

Claire stopped reading.

“Clara is also his descendant.”

Elias nodded.

“The system was created before Arthur knew Clara existed.”

“Then anyone using Grandpa’s ring and a family blood sample could enter.”

“Yes.”

Claire continued reading.

The person entering the vault is searching for the Founder’s Ledger.

This ledger is not the black book in my study.

It contains the names of every private investor, political partner, intelligence contact, and hidden beneficiary involved in Hawthorne Maritime since its creation.

Some are criminals.

Some are officials.

Some are both.

If Victor Lang obtains it, no witness will be safe.

If Rachel obtains it, she may try to destroy the company.

If Daniel obtains it, he will sell it to save himself.

Trust evidence, not blood.

Claire lowered the letter.

“Was the ledger in the vault?”

Elias nodded.

“It is gone.”

Eleanor stood in the doorway.

“Victor has it.”

Claire looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because he spent twenty-three years searching for it.”

“Why didn’t he take it earlier?”

“He needed Arthur’s access.”

“Rachel had access.”

“Rachel did not know which vault contained the ledger.”

Elias looked confused.

“She was the trustee.”

“To the estate,” Eleanor said. “Not the Founder’s Archive.”

Claire thought of the person behind the top-floor glass.

“Someone entered the vault while Rachel was on Victor’s boat.”

“Unless they separated before the boat reached the marina.”

Clara approached.

“Or unless Rachel was never on the boat.”

Claire remembered the smoke, distance, and darkness.

They had seen a red-haired woman.

They assumed it was Rachel.

Eleanor looked toward Arthur.

“Victor has used doubles before.”

Claire felt a chill.

“The passports in the operations room.”

“Multiple identities,” Clara said.

“Multiple women,” Claire added.

Elias turned pale.

“The payment network supported seven people.”

A monitor near Arthur’s bed changed rhythm.

Everyone looked toward him.

His eyes opened slightly.

Claire took his hand.

“Grandpa?”

Arthur moved his lips.

She leaned closer.

“Do not trust Elias.”

Claire froze.

Elias stared at the bed.

“What did he say?”

Arthur’s eyes closed again.

Claire straightened slowly.

“Nothing.”

Elias studied her.

The room felt smaller.

Eleanor watched both of them.

Clara moved closer to Claire.

Elias reached into his coat.

Eleanor raised her gun.

“Take your hand out.”

He stopped.

“It is only my phone.”

“Slowly.”

Elias removed the device and placed it on the table.

The screen lit up.

A message had arrived.

It showed a photograph of Rebecca tied to a chair.

Behind her stood Victor Lang.

Rachel was beside him.

This time there was no fog, smoke, or distance.

Rachel’s injured shoulder was bandaged.

Victor held the Founder’s Ledger.

The message beneath the photograph read:

ONE HAWTHORNE WILL BE EXCHANGED FOR THE LEDGER’S DECRYPTION KEY.

COME TO THE OLD SHIPYARD AT DAWN.

BRING CELESTE.

Claire stared at her name.

Not Claire.

Celeste.

Another message appeared immediately.

AND ASK ARTHUR WHY YOUR DNA MATCHES DANIEL’S.

Claire looked at her unconscious grandfather.

Clara read the message over her shoulder.

“That’s impossible.”

Eleanor’s face had gone white.

Claire turned toward her mother.

“You said Daniel wasn’t my father.”

“He isn’t.”

“The message says my DNA matches his.”

“Victor lies.”

Elias spoke quietly.

“Not about something that can be tested.”

Claire remembered Arthur’s emergency vault.

Direct descendants could enter.

Daniel had raised her.

Eleanor had given birth to her.

Yet both facts could be true only if the family history was darker than anyone had admitted.

Arthur’s fingers tightened weakly around Claire’s hand.

His eyes opened.

“Grandpa, who is my father?”

He stared at her with fear and regret.

Before he could answer, every monitor in the room shut off.

The lights died.

Emergency alarms began screaming through the hospital.

In the darkness, someone grabbed Claire from behind.

A cloth covered her mouth.

She smelled chemicals.

Eleanor fired.

Glass shattered.

Clara screamed Claire’s name.

As consciousness disappeared, Claire heard a man whisper against her ear.

“Your grandfather lied about which baby he took from the harbor.”

Then everything went black.
