Chapter 15 - The Stranger Who Knew Claire’s Real Name

The door opened one inch.

Cold air slipped through the gap.

Noah raised the flashlight like a weapon.

Leah reached for her phone.

Claire did not move.

A white envelope slid beneath the door.

Then the doorknob stopped turning.

Footsteps crossed the porch.

By the time Noah pulled the door open, the yard was empty.

Only a line of footprints remained in the snow.

They began at the porch.

They ended ten feet away.

No tracks led toward the trees.

No tire marks marked the road.

It was as if the visitor had disappeared.

Claire picked up the envelope.

Her name was written across it.

Not Claire Bennett.

Claire Vale.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The mother was listed as Lillian Marie Vale.

The father’s name had been left blank.

A second document showed that Lillian had died when Claire was six months old.

Cause of death:

Undetermined.

A third page was a handwritten letter.

Claire recognized Richard’s writing.

Lillian,

You should have accepted the offer.

Samuel cannot protect you forever.

The child belongs to this family now.

If you return, neither of you will survive the scandal.

Claire read the final line twice.

Then she turned toward Rose.

“What scandal?”

Rose lowered herself onto the staircase.

Noah picked up the birth certificate.

“If Evelyn isn’t Claire’s mother, why was she raised as ours?”

Rose covered her face.

“Because Richard needed control of Lillian’s estate.”

Claire felt the room become distant.

“The twelve-million-dollar trust.”

“That was only part of it.”

“How much was there?”

Rose looked up.

“More than eighty million dollars.”

Nobody spoke.

Outside, something moved near the trees.

Leah closed the curtains.

Claire’s phone vibrated again.

A live video appeared on the screen.

The image showed an old concrete room.

A man sat in a chair with his hands tied behind him.

His face was bruised.

His gray hair was matted with blood.

Richard Bennett lifted his head toward the camera.

Someone stood behind him.

Only a dark coat and gloved hands were visible.

The stranger placed a black pistol against Richard’s temple.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

“Claire Vale, your father has one final story to tell.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Richard began shaking his head.

“Don’t listen to them,” he rasped. “They killed Lillian.”

The stranger pulled back the pistol.

“No, Richard.”

A gloved hand placed a photograph in front of the camera.

It showed Lillian holding baby Claire beside another man.

The man was not Richard.

The stranger continued.

“You killed Lillian because she discovered who Claire’s real father was.”

Rose made a broken sound behind them.

Claire looked at her grandmother.

“You know that man.”

Rose’s lips trembled.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Before Rose could answer, the cabin lights went out.

Glass shattered in the kitchen.

Noah pulled Claire to the floor.

Leah shouted for everyone to stay down.

The live video continued playing from Claire’s phone.

Richard looked beyond the camera.

His eyes widened.

“You,” he whispered.

A gunshot exploded through the speaker.

The video went black.

At the same moment, footsteps entered the cabin.

A man’s voice came from the dark hallway.

“Claire.”

She stopped breathing.

The voice was not Richard’s.

It was calm.

Familiar in a way she could not understand.

A flashlight beam moved across the wall.

The stranger stepped closer.

“I have waited twenty-five years to meet my daughter.”

Claire tightened her hand around the black ledger.

Behind her, Rose whispered one terrified name.

The stranger smiled in the darkness.

May you like

And Claire realized the collapse of the Bennett family had not been the end of her story.

It had only opened the first door.
