Chapter 6 - Thanksgiving Honors

On Thanksgiving morning, Clara stood in a crowded auditorium while her commanding officer presented her with a commendation.
Her unit had redesigned an emergency medical supply system, cutting response times during regional disasters. Clara had led the project for nearly a year.
The applause was warm and sincere.
Afterward, younger officers approached to thank her. One told Clara that seeing a woman lead with calm authority had changed how she imagined her own career.
Clara felt something loosen inside her.
For years, her family had described her discipline as coldness and her independence as failure. Yet the people who worked beside her understood exactly what those qualities were worth.
She drove to Magnolia Hill still wearing her uniform.
Cars filled the driveway. Through the windows, she saw relatives gathered beneath the chandelier. The American flag Richard displayed during holidays stood near the dining room entrance.
Marjorie opened the door and frowned immediately.
“You wore that?”
“I told you I was coming from a ceremony.”
Serena appeared behind her with a glass of wine.
“Another medal?” she asked lightly.
“A commendation.”
“That’s nice.”
Neither woman asked what it was for.
Richard greeted Clara with an awkward embrace. She handed him the sealed envelope.
“What’s this?”
“Something we need to discuss after dinner.”
He recognized the attorney’s name printed in the corner. His face lost color.
Before he could speak, Marjorie called everyone to the table.
For twenty minutes, Clara ate quietly while her mother praised Serena’s career, Serena’s taste, Serena’s apartment, and Serena’s plans for the coming year.
Then an aunt complimented Clara’s uniform.
Marjorie laughed.
“Clara has always preferred practical things. She couldn’t hold a candle to Serena when it comes to building a real life.”
Clara placed her fork down.

The final payment had already left her account.
Her silence had expired with it.
