Chapter 15 - The Woman Behind the Door

The old portrait had hung in the Carter house for decades.

It showed Arthur, Teresa, Daniel and several other members of the family.

Alex had seen it thousands of times.

He had never noticed the door.

It was painted into the background.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Lily touched it.

“Mommy said the door was real.”

Alex examined the frame.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a key.

And beneath the key was a handwritten note.

For Alex.

He unfolded it.

You have spent years believing your family protected you.

They didn't.

They protected the story.

Alex's eyes moved across the page.

Clara's handwriting.

I need you to understand why I disappeared.

If I had stayed, Lily would have become the next target.

If I had died, they would have controlled the story.

So I chose a third option.

I became someone they could not find.

Alex's breathing became shallow.

The note continued.

But now you have found the truth too early.

And that means someone has betrayed me.

Alex looked at Derek.

Then Teresa.

Then Arthur.

The final line was underlined.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they know where I am.

Alex stared at the sentence.

A sound came from behind the wall.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lily whispered:

“That's Mommy.”

Alex turned toward the hidden door.

He inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

The door opened into darkness.

A narrow passage stretched beyond it.

At the end was a faint light.

Alex walked forward.

“Clara?”

No answer.

He stepped into the room.

There was a chair.

A table.

A lamp.

A stack of documents.

And a photograph.

Alex picked it up.

It showed Clara standing beside Lily.

But the photograph had been taken that morning.

Alex's hands began shaking.

Clara was alive.

She had been in the house.

Recently.

He turned.

The door behind him slammed shut.

Lily screamed from the hallway.

“Daddy!”

Alex rushed back.

The door wouldn't open.

“Lily!”

“I can't open it!”

Alex hit the door.

“Stay there!”

Then another voice came from the darkness behind him.

“Alex.”

He stopped.

A woman stepped into the light.

Clara.

Alive.

Tired.

Terrified.

Alex couldn't move.

“Clara?”

She nodded.

He reached for her.

She stepped back.

“Don't.”

His heart broke.

“Why?”

“Because if you touch me, they'll know I told you.”

“Who?”

Clara looked toward the ceiling.

Then toward the hidden camera in the corner.

“They're watching.”

Alex turned.

The camera's red light was blinking.

Clara whispered:

“They've been watching you since the day you came home.”

Alex looked at her.

“Who are they?”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I knew.”

She took a breath.

“I was wrong.”

Alex waited.

Clara stepped closer.

“There are three people behind everything.”

“Daniel?”

She shook her head.

“Victor?”

“No.”

“Teresa?”

“No.”

Alex felt a chill.

“Then who?”

Clara looked at him.

“The first one is the person you trusted most.”

Alex's face changed.

“The second one is the person you think is dead.”

He stared.

“And the third?”

Clara's eyes moved toward the door.

“The third one…”

A sudden sound came from the hallway.

Lily screamed.

“DADDY!”

Alex turned.

The door opened.

Derek stood there.

His face was covered in fear.

“Alex, get away from her.”

Clara stepped backward.

“Derek, no.”

Derek looked at Clara.

Then Alex.

Then Lily.

And whispered:

“She wasn't supposed to wake up.”

Alex froze.

“What?”

Derek's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought Clara was the one they were hiding.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

Derek slowly pointed toward Lily.

“She isn't.”

The lights went out.

A phone rang somewhere in the darkness.

Then a man's voice came through the speakers.

“Now that everyone is finally together…”

A pause.

“…we can begin.”

The lights returned.

But Clara was gone.

The hidden door stood open.

Lily was still outside.

Derek was on his knees.

And on the table where Clara had been standing was a single photograph.

Alex picked it up.

His face went pale.

It showed Clara.

Arthur.

Teresa.

Daniel.

Victor.

And one final person.

Alex.

But the photograph had been taken twenty years earlier.

Alex stared at the image.

He was standing beside them as a child.

In his hand was a small red-haired doll.

The same doll Lily was holding now.

Alex slowly looked toward his daughter.

Lily stared back at him.

Then she whispered the one sentence that made him realize the truth was nowhere near finished.

“Daddy…”

She pointed at the photograph.

“That isn't the first time Mommy disappeared.”

The phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name.

CLARA.

Alex answered.

No one spoke.

Then Clara whispered:

“Alex, whatever you do…”

A long silence.

“…do not let Lily remember who you really are.”

The call ended.

Alex stood frozen.

Lily looked up at him.

And for the first time since the funeral began, Alex realized there was one question nobody had asked.

Not where Clara had gone.

Not who had ordered the funeral.

Not who was inside the coffin.

But why Clara had spent six years preparing their daughter for the day her own father would become the most dangerous person in the house.

The screen of Clara's phone lit up one final time.

One new message appeared.

You have only remembered half of it.

May you like

And beneath it was an address Alex had never seen before.

The address of the house where he was born.
