Chapter 7 - A Beach Rebuilds

After the announcement, something unexpected happened.
A little girl picked up an empty bucket and walked toward the ruined castle.
“My brother and I can help rebuild it,” she told Noah.
Then the older couple who had donated shells returned with more.
A group of teenagers brought buckets of wet sand. Parents formed a line from the water to the castle. Children searched the shoreline for flowers, smooth stones, and pieces of driftwood.
Within minutes, the entire beach was helping.
Noah stood beside Walter, uncertain.
“What should we build first?” Walter asked.
“The rescue tower.”
Walter nodded.
“Then you should show us how.”
Noah knelt in the sand.
He began shaping the first wall.
Emily watched as strangers worked around her son. Some knew Daniel. Others had never heard his name before that morning. Yet they carried sand as if they were helping repair something more important than a castle.
One of the fishermen Daniel had saved arrived after seeing the video online.
His name was Marcus Hill.
He walked with a slight limp caused by the winter accident. When he saw Noah, he removed his cap.
“Your dad saved my life.”
Noah looked up.
“Were you scared?”
“More scared than I’ve ever been.”
“Was Dad scared?”
Marcus knelt beside him.
“I think brave people get scared too. Your dad just didn’t let fear decide what he did next.”
Marcus placed a large white shell near the castle entrance.
“I came here today with my wife and daughter because your father gave me more time with them.”
Noah touched the shell.
“Then this can be your tower too.”
Emily turned away, crying quietly.
Vanessa watched the rebuilding from near the boardwalk.
No one invited her to help.

For once, the crowd was not interested in her phone, her clothing, or her number of followers.
They were interested in the boy she had tried to make invisible.
