Chapter 2 - The Night He Chose Wrong

By the time they arrived at Vanessa’s house, Noah’s fever had risen.

He remained curled against Claire on the sofa while Daniel and Vanessa talked in the kitchen. Lily sat beside him, drawing a purple dinosaur to make him feel better.

“You can have it when I’m finished,” she said.

Noah managed a weak smile.

Dinner was barely touched. Claire repeatedly told Daniel they needed to leave, but he kept asking for another ten minutes.

Then Lily began coughing.

She had been running through the hallway and laughing when her breathing became strained. Vanessa immediately grabbed her inhaler while Daniel rushed across the room.

“Call the hospital,” Vanessa cried.

“She has a rescue inhaler,” Claire said. “Help her use it while I call emergency services.”

At the same moment, Noah’s body became rigid against the sofa.

Claire shouted his name.

His eyes did not focus on her.

The room transformed into panic.

Claire lowered him safely onto the cushions and called for an ambulance. Daniel stood between the two children, staring from Noah to Lily.

“Help me!” Claire screamed.

But Vanessa clutched Daniel’s arm.

“Lily needs you.”

Daniel turned toward her.

It lasted only a second, but Claire saw the decision happen.

He lifted Lily into his arms.

Claire could not believe it.

“Daniel, take Noah!”

“Lily can’t breathe properly!”

“Her inhaler is working. Noah is having a seizure!”

Daniel’s face twisted with fear and frustration.

“You’re always dramatic when he gets sick.”

Claire stared at him.

Even Vanessa went silent.

The ambulance dispatcher said emergency crews were delayed by a major traffic accident nearby. The hospital was less than five minutes away.

Claire wrapped Noah in a blanket and carried him toward the car.

Daniel followed with Lily. Vanessa climbed into the back seat beside them.

During the drive, Claire kept talking to Noah, telling him that she was there and that help was coming. His body had relaxed, but he remained frighteningly weak.

Daniel drove too fast while Vanessa repeatedly asked about Lily.

No one asked Claire if she needed help holding Noah.

When they reached St. Augustine Medical Center, Daniel stopped near the emergency entrance.

Claire pushed open the door before the car had completely settled.

“Help!” she shouted as she ran beneath the bright entrance lights. “Please help my son!”

Hospital staff turned toward her.

Daniel followed, carrying Lily.

Vanessa ran behind him.

“She can’t breathe right,” Daniel shouted. “Take her first!”

Claire stopped so suddenly that she almost stumbled.

“Daniel, Noah came first!”

A triage nurse moved toward them, trying to assess both children.

Daniel stepped in front of Claire.

“Lily has asthma,” he said. “Noah gets fevers all the time.”

Claire felt as if the entire world had gone silent.

She could hear only Noah’s shallow breaths against her shoulder and the echo of her husband’s words.

Noah gets fevers all the time.

As if their child’s suffering were an inconvenience.

As if familiarity made danger less urgent.

Dr. Elena Marsh was coming through the sliding doors when she heard him.

She looked once at Noah and immediately shouted for a gurney.

A nurse rushed toward Claire.

“Give him to me.”

Claire hesitated for half a second, terrified to let go.

“We have him,” the nurse promised.

The staff placed Noah on the gurney and hurried him inside. Claire ran beside them.

Daniel remained near the entrance with Vanessa and Lily.

Lily’s breathing had already improved after using her inhaler. Another nurse calmly guided her toward an examination room.

Daniel watched Claire disappear through the emergency doors.

For the first time that night, he seemed to understand what he had done.

“Should I go with Noah?” he asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You should stay with us until we know Lily is safe.”

Daniel stayed.

Claire did not see him again for nearly an hour.

Inside the pediatric treatment area, she stood near the wall while doctors and nurses worked around Noah. No one gave her false promises, but Dr. Marsh kept her informed.

Noah’s fever had triggered the seizure. Tests indicated a serious infection that required immediate treatment and close monitoring.

“You brought him in at the right moment,” Dr. Marsh told her.

Claire covered her mouth as tears ran down her face.

“I should have brought him sooner. I knew he was sick.”

“You are here now.”

“My husband said I was overreacting.”

Dr. Marsh glanced toward the hallway.

“Your husband is not the person treating your child.”

Twenty minutes later, Daniel finally entered.

“How is he?” he asked.

Claire looked at him but said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Lily is stable. They said it was a moderate asthma episode.”

Claire continued staring at him.

“What?” he asked defensively.

“You told them to take her first.”

“I panicked.”

“You told them Noah gets fevers all the time.”

“I was trying to explain the situation.”

“You dismissed him while he was unconscious in my arms.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

Claire almost laughed.

Their son was surrounded by medical equipment, and Daniel was worried about appearances.

“Where should we discuss it?” she asked. “At Vanessa’s house?”

His face hardened.

“This isn’t the time for jealousy.”

“No. It’s the first time I’m seeing everything clearly.”
