Chapter 13 - The Fall of Ward Meridian

By sunrise, news vans surrounded Ward Meridian’s headquarters.

The state filed emergency notices freezing the company’s major accounts. Regulators suspended new investment activity. Connor’s photograph appeared across financial news channels beside phrases such as alleged fraud, investor losses, and executive conspiracy.

Brenda’s arrest received even more attention because footage of her assaulting Olivia leaked online.

The public saw fifteen seconds.

Brenda grabbed Olivia.

Olivia’s face struck the salad.

Connor laughed.

Investigators entered.

By noon, millions of people had watched it.

Some praised Olivia’s composure. Others made jokes about ranch dressing. Strangers analyzed her expression, her clothing, and the way she lifted her glass.

Olivia turned off her phone.

The moment was not empowering to live through.

It hurt.

Her cheek was bruised. Her scalp ached where Brenda had pulled her hair. Every replay transformed the humiliation into entertainment.

Naomi arranged for Olivia to enter Ward Meridian’s offices through the underground garage.

The building was nearly empty.

Employees had been instructed to remain home while investigators seized records.

Olivia stepped into the lobby and looked at the silver company crest.

She remembered the rented office above the dental clinic. She remembered assembling desks with Connor at midnight. She remembered their first investor signing papers on a cardboard box because the conference table had not arrived.

A uniformed officer escorted her to the forty-second floor.

Naomi waited inside Connor’s office.

“We found seventeen shell companies,” Naomi said. “At least six transferred money through Northstar.”

“Any connection to Elaine Cross?”

“Not yet.”

“Connor said the trust purchased a house in 2004.”

“We confirmed the property record.”

Olivia stared at her.

“It exists?”

“Yes.”

“Who pays the taxes?”

“A private account administered through a bank in Luxembourg.”

“Who lives there?”

“We don’t know.”

“Did you send anyone?”

“Local officers are observing the property. No movement.”

Olivia walked toward Connor’s desk.

Family photographs had been removed, but a pale rectangle remained where one had stood.

“What are you looking for?” Naomi asked.

“The thing he would never allow investigators to recognize as important.”

Olivia opened drawers.

Contracts, pens, business cards.

Nothing.

She examined the bookshelves.

Connor did not read much, but he enjoyed owning expensive editions. Most had never been opened.

One book showed wear along the spine.

The Odyssey.

Olivia removed it.

The pages had been hollowed out.

Inside was a small cassette tape.

Naomi put on gloves before taking it.

A handwritten label read:

E.B. Interview 6

“E.B.,” Olivia whispered.

“Elaine Bennett?”

“Or Elaine Cross.”

Naomi found an old cassette player in the evidence equipment brought by investigators.

The tape crackled.

Then a woman began speaking.

Olivia knew the voice before the first sentence ended.

She had not heard it in twenty-four years, yet her body recognized it.

Her mother.

“If Daniel ever hears this,” Elaine said, “then Victor has already broken his promise.”

Olivia gripped the edge of the desk.

The recording continued.

“The Northstar accounts are not development funds. They are being used to purchase cooperation from officials involved in the Saint Orison project. Brenda says the payments are legal retainers. They are not.”

A man’s voice asked a question too faint to understand.

Elaine replied, “No, Daniel does not know everything. I am protecting him.”

Another question.

“I cannot leave yet. Victor has the original participant list.”

Static interrupted the recording.

Then Elaine’s voice returned.

“If something happens to me, tell Olivia I did not abandon her.”

Olivia’s knees weakened.

Naomi moved closer but did not touch her.

The tape continued.

“There is a second child.”

Silence followed.

A man asked another question.

Elaine began crying.

“Victor took him. Daniel thinks the baby died.”

The recording ended.

Olivia stared at the cassette player.

Naomi stopped the tape.

Neither woman spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Olivia whispered, “I have a brother.”

Naomi looked at the label.

“Interview six suggests there may be more tapes.”

Olivia turned toward the empty space on Connor’s desk.

The company’s collapse no longer felt like the end of the story.

It felt like someone had deliberately placed the first answer where she would find it.
