Chapter 4 - The Night Bellamy’s Locked Its Doors

Brett moved faster than I expected.

He knocked Elena’s phone from her hand and ran toward the kitchen.

I followed, shouting for security.

He shoved through the swinging doors, sending plates crashing to the floor.

Customers stood from their tables.

Carla screamed.

Brett reached the service hallway, but the exit was already locked.

Salvatore stood at the opposite end.

He had removed his jacket.

His expression was calm.

That frightened Brett more than anger would have.

“Move,” Brett said.

Salvatore did not respond.

Brett pointed toward me.

“She planned this! She’s been stealing from the restaurant!”

Salvatore watched his lips.

Then he looked at me.

I signed, He says I am the thief.

Salvatore lifted one eyebrow.

Brett stepped closer.

“I know you can understand me. Tell your people to open the door.”

Salvatore raised his hands.

Tell him the meeting is beginning.

The staff, restaurant owners, and several guests were led into the private dining room.

Vincent Hale arrived ten minutes later, furious and confused.

He stopped speaking when he saw the police detectives.

On the table sat copies of false invoices, warehouse photographs, bank transfers, and audio recordings collected over several months.

Brett tried denial.

Vincent tried outrage.

Both tried blaming me.

Then Elena played the recording from Brett’s office.

His own voice described the plan to frame me.

A second recording revealed his arrangement with Vincent.

They had stolen more than four hundred thousand dollars from Bellamy’s and sold private information about wealthy guests to outside criminals.

No one laughed at me now.

Brett turned toward the restaurant owner.

“You know me. I built this place.”

“You nearly destroyed it,” the owner replied.

Vincent attempted to leave.

The detectives blocked him.

Brett’s confidence collapsed.

He looked at Carla.

“You knew about the invoices.”

Carla stepped backward.

“I knew you changed tables. I didn’t know why.”

“You took money from me.”

“You said they were bonuses.”

Every friendship Brett had purchased disappeared within seconds.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Tessa, I can fix this.”

I almost laughed.

For years, he had trained everyone to doubt me.

Now I was the only person he believed might save him.

“You said no one would believe me,” I replied.

His eyes dropped to my hands.

I signed the next sentence so Salvatore could receive it directly.

He was right about one thing. People often believe the person with power.

Salvatore waited.

Then I continued.

But power changes when someone keeps evidence.

Elena gave the detectives the recorder.

Brett and Vincent were arrested for fraud, conspiracy, attempted theft, and other financial crimes connected to the restaurant.

As they were led away, Brett looked back at me.

“You think Marquetti cares about you?” he shouted. “You’re useful until you aren’t.”

The words followed me after the doors closed.

Salvatore saw the doubt in my face.

He signed, He wants his last lie to survive longer than he does.

“What if it isn’t a lie?”

The room had emptied, leaving only Salvatore, Elena, and me.

Salvatore looked toward Elena.

She nodded and stepped outside.

Then he faced me.

People have used my deafness to underestimate me, he signed. Others have used it to speak for me. You did neither.

“That does not answer my question.”

No. It does not.

He paused.

I first noticed you because you signed. I trusted you because you told me the truth when lying would have been safer.

My throat tightened.

Brett’s arrest should have made me feel victorious.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

“What happens to Bellamy’s?”

Salvatore’s expression became practical again.

The owner must decide whether the restaurant deserves to survive.

“And me?”

That depends on what you want.

No one had asked me that in years.

Not what I needed.

Not what I could endure.

What I wanted.

I looked around the private room where Brett had expected me to be humiliated.

“I don’t want to spend my life waiting for cruel people to become kind.”

May you like

Salvatore nodded.

Then do not wait.
