Chapter 14 - The Choice Judith Never Expected

Rachel’s first instinct was to surrender everything.

Thomas was coughing.

Maya pressed her sleeve over her mouth.

Detective Blake’s officers searched for the ventilation cutoff.

Claire found the control panel but discovered the wiring had been rerouted.

A countdown appeared on a small screen.

Four minutes.

Judith’s voice came through the speaker again.

“Place the seal and ledger inside the tunnel compartment.”

A narrow metal drawer opened in the wall.

Rachel held the master ledger.

Maya shook her head.

“If she gets this, she destroys the evidence.”

“If we do not, people die.”

“There may be another way.”

Rachel studied the ventilation plan mounted near the service panel.

The system had been added during renovation.

Fresh air entered through a central shaft.

The gas flowed through two branch ducts.

Rachel traced the lines.

One passed above the records room.

The other passed above the corridor.

The original stone chimney remained disconnected from the modern system.

But buildings offered alternatives to those who understood them.

Rachel pointed toward the upper wall.

“That brick section used to connect to the boiler chimney.”

Claire climbed onto a cabinet.

“It is sealed.”

“Only with a single layer of masonry.”

Blake’s officers used tools to break the bricks.

Three minutes.

The air grew heavier.

Rachel’s vision blurred.

Thomas collapsed to one knee.

They opened a hole into the chimney shaft.

Cold air rushed inward, but not fast enough.

Rachel examined the service panel again.

“If we reverse the exhaust fan, it will pull air from the chimney.”

“The controls are locked,” Claire said.

“Then bypass them.”

“I need access to the main power cable.”

Rachel pointed below the floor grating.

Two officers lifted it.

Claire climbed down and cut through a cable housing.

Two minutes.

Judith spoke again.

“Your father is dying, Rachel.”

Rachel looked at Thomas.

He forced himself upright.

“Do not give her anything.”

“You are my father,” Rachel said.

He managed a faint smile.

“That is the first sensible thing anyone has said today.”

One minute thirty seconds.

Claire connected two wires.

The ventilation fan stopped.

Then it reversed.

Air roared through the broken chimney opening.

The gas began clearing.

The countdown reached zero.

Nothing happened.

Judith’s system had relied on trapped air, not an explosive device.

Rachel stood slowly.

“You failed,” she said toward the speaker.

Judith’s response was calm.

“No. I learned which choice you would make.”

The tunnel door opened.

Grant stumbled into the vault with blood on his shirt.

He collapsed near the entrance.

Blake’s officers pulled him inside.

A knife wound crossed his side.

Grant grabbed Rachel’s sleeve.

“She has Adrian.”

“Where?”

“Tribunal building.”

“Why are you here?”

“She sent me with a message.”

Rachel looked at him with no sympathy.

“What message?”

“She said you have one hour to appear with the seal.”

“And if I do not?”

“She will present herself as Evelyn and declare Adrian incompetent.”

“What about Nathaniel?”

Grant’s face tightened.

“He tried to stop her.”

“Is he alive?”

“I do not know.”

Detective Blake called emergency medical services while Maya contacted the tribunal.

The tribunal representatives had already assembled at a private courthouse outside Briarwood.

Judith had submitted documents under Evelyn’s name and requested an emergency closed hearing.

The proceeding would begin in fifty-two minutes.

Maya held up the master ledger.

“We have evidence, the seal, and Rachel’s petition.”

Claire said, “Judith controls at least one tribunal representative.”

“Which one?”

“I do not know.”

Rachel looked at Grant.

“Do you?”

Grant pressed a hand against his wound.

“Judge Roland Pike.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“He is chairing the tribunal.”

Grant nodded.

“Judith paid his son’s debts.”

“Can we remove him?”

“Not before the hearing.”

Rachel closed the ledger.

“Then we expose him during it.”

Police transported Rachel, Maya, Claire, Thomas, and the evidence under escort.

Grant went to the hospital.

Detective Blake coordinated with federal agents, who were now investigating the trust transfers.

The courthouse stood behind high walls on a wooded estate.

No press had been informed.

Inside, three financial representatives sat behind a curved bench.

Judge Roland Pike occupied the center position.

He was a severe man with silver hair and a red judicial sash.

Judith stood at one table wearing a white suit.

Her hair had been styled like Evelyn’s in old photographs.

Adrian sat beside her.

He looked pale and unfocused.

Nathaniel was nowhere in sight.

Rachel entered carrying the sealed evidence case.

Judith smiled.

“You came.”

Rachel looked at Adrian.

His pupils were dilated.

“What did you give him?”

Judith turned toward the panel.

“My daughter continues to display paranoid hostility.”

Rachel’s attorney placed the birth record, police reports, surveillance footage, and master ledger before the tribunal.

Maya spoke clearly.

“The woman identifying herself as Evelyn Ashcroft Shaw is Judith Evelyn Monroe, formerly Judith Evelyn Shaw. The real Evelyn died on October 17, 1989.”

Judith produced identification documents, tax history, and medical records claiming that she had lived under protected identities after an attempted kidnapping.

Judge Pike accepted them without visible doubt.

Rachel understood immediately.

The judge had already chosen.

The financial representatives appeared less convinced.

One asked Judith to provide the original Ashcroft seal.

Judith looked toward Rachel.

“My daughter stole it.”

Rachel placed the pendant on the table.

“I possess it because Evelyn placed it on me at birth.”

Judge Pike said, “Possession does not prove identity.”

Maya submitted the hospital photograph.

The judge barely examined it.

Then the tribunal doors opened.

Nathaniel entered with Detective Blake.

His face was bruised, but he walked without assistance.

Judith’s composure cracked.

Nathaniel looked at the panel.

“I was present when Evelyn died.”

Judge Pike attempted to stop him.

“You are not a recognized party.”

Nathaniel raised a small drive.

“I have Evelyn’s final statement.”

Judith moved toward him.

Federal agents entered and blocked her.

The recording played.

Evelyn’s weak voice filled the courtroom.

If I die, Judith must never control my children.

She has already moved money through Malcolm Crane.

Nathaniel has the seal.

Henry has the ledger.

My daughter Eleanor and my son Adrian must be found.

Neither child should rule alone.

Rachel looked at Adrian.

His eyes focused slightly.

The recording continued.

They must choose a guardian together.

If one is coerced, drugged, missing, or dead, control passes to the Ashcroft Public Restoration Board until both can decide freely.

Judith lunged for the recording device.

Agents restrained her.

Judge Pike stood.

“This hearing is suspended.”

Maya turned toward him.

“No. Your financial connection to Judith has been documented.”

Blake placed the payment records on the bench.

Pike’s face went gray.

Adrian suddenly collapsed.

Rachel ran toward him.

His breathing was shallow.

Nathaniel checked his pulse.

“He has been overdosed.”

Paramedics entered.

As they lifted Adrian onto a stretcher, he opened his eyes.

He gripped Rachel’s hand.

“The ledger is not complete,” he whispered.

“What is missing?”

He struggled to speak.

“Grant was never Judith’s son.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“Then whose son is he?”

May you like

Adrian’s eyes rolled back.

The paramedics rushed him from the room before he could answer.
