The Woman Who Owned the Rain / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - When the Lights Went Out

The darkness lasted only three seconds.

Emergency lighting came on along the walls, casting the hall in dim gold.

Lily tightened her arms around Evelyn’s neck.

Grant moved toward the control panel.

“What happened to the power?”

“I cut it,” Evelyn said.

Vanessa stared at her. “Why?”

“So no one can delete anything from the house network.”

Grant stopped walking.

Outside, car doors closed in the rain.

Men and women in dark jackets approached the entrance. Two carried sealed evidence cases. Another held a court order inside a clear waterproof folder.

Agent Daniel Ross entered first.

Behind him came Evelyn’s attorney, Naomi Price, followed by state investigators and a representative from child protective services.

No one rushed.

No weapons were raised.

Their calm made Grant more afraid.

Ross looked at him.

“Grant Carter, step away from the office and keep your hands visible.”

Grant’s mouth opened.

“This is my home.”

Naomi Price removed a document from her case.

“No,” she said. “It is not.”

Vanessa stood from the sofa.

“This is absurd. Evelyn has been missing for over a year. Grant has legal authority.”

“Temporary household authority,” Naomi replied. “Not ownership, not trust control, and not permission to file fraudulent documents.”

Grant turned toward Evelyn.

“You brought federal agents into our house?”

“You brought an international criminal network into mine.”

The words silenced the room.

Vanessa’s face lost its color.

Lily lifted her head from Evelyn’s shoulder.

“Mommy, are you staying?”

Evelyn’s expression softened immediately.

“Yes.”

“For how many sleeps?”

“All of them.”

Lily began crying again, but these tears were different.

Evelyn carried her to Mrs. Alvarez, who entered through a side door with an umbrella and a coat. The older woman looked at Lily and covered her mouth.

“My sweet girl.”

Lily reached for her.

Evelyn kissed her daughter’s forehead.

“Go with Mrs. Alvarez to the library. I’ll be there soon.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

When Lily had left the hall, Evelyn faced Grant.

He tried to recover his confidence.

“You don’t understand what happened while you were gone.”

“I understand more than you think.”

“I was trying to protect this family.”

“You tried to declare me dead.”

“I was told you might never return.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I didn’t forge anything.”

Vanessa moved toward the staircase.

Ross blocked her path.

“Ms. Monroe, please remain in the hall.”

She lifted her chin.

“I want an attorney.”

“You are entitled to one.”

Grant looked toward the open door, calculating distance.

Evelyn recognized the expression. She had seen it on suspects who still believed escape was possible.

“Victor Hale is in custody,” she said.

Grant froze.

It was a calculated lie.

Hale had not yet been captured.

Grant’s reaction confirmed what Evelyn needed.

“He called you,” she continued. “He warned you about the raid in Croatia.”

Grant said nothing.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You told me Hale was safe.”

Ross watched both of them carefully.

Grant’s fear became anger.

“You were supposed to be gone twelve weeks,” he said to Evelyn. “Do you know what it was like? Raising Lily alone? Running the company while everyone waited for you?”

“You did not run my company.”

“I kept everything alive.”

“You borrowed against projects you didn’t own.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Grant pointed toward Lily’s torn letter on the floor.

“And what choice did you give us when you disappeared?”

Evelyn picked up the pieces.

“I trusted you.”

May you like

Grant looked away.

That was the one accusation he could not answer.
