Chapter 12 - THE LAST BROADCAST

Laura refused to leave her mother again.

Evelyn took her face between both hands.

“I did not survive twenty-two years to watch you die beside me.”

“You don’t get to disappear a second time.”

“I’m not disappearing. I’m buying you nine minutes.”

Reeves opened the emergency stairwell.

Owen pulled Laura toward it as security officers entered the observation room.

Evelyn returned to her operator desk, activated a citywide emergency channel, and transmitted a false evacuation order using her own credentials.

The building’s automated system unlocked every exterior door.

Laura, Reeves, and Owen escaped through the maintenance tunnel.

Celia waited with a van.

They reached the Meridian Theater with fourteen minutes remaining.

The master phrase opened the second security door.

The bird returns before the final bell.

A hidden elevator descended beneath the circular studio.

Level one contained rows of identity records.

Level two held medical files, death certificates, and police credentials.

Level three was a broadcasting chamber.

Mark sat inside a glass room surrounded by microphones.

He was not restrained.

Andrew Vale stood beside him.

Vale was older than the photographs Laura remembered. His silver hair was carefully combed, and he wore the calm expression of a man who believed every possible outcome belonged to him.

Daniel Reed stood near the control panel.

The dead founder of the Echo Registry appeared exhausted but alive.

Vale smiled at Laura through the glass.

“Your mother always said you would find the truth.”

Mark rose from his chair.

“Laura, don’t speak.”

Vale pressed a control.

Every microphone activated.

“We already have enough of her voice,” he said. “The system only requires the master phrase.”

Laura looked at the upload countdown.

Nine minutes.

“You heard the phrase at the communications center.”

“We heard a twenty-two-year-old emergency recording. The master key requires an adult match from the same speaker.”

Vale needed Laura to repeat the sentence.

Daniel Reed stared at the floor.

Owen approached the glass.

“You built this to save people.”

Daniel answered quietly.

“I built it because the law could not save them.”

“And now Vale sells their lives.”

“I lost control.”

Vale laughed.

“No, Daniel. You discovered that control is only another service.”

Reeves moved toward the server rack.

Vale displayed a live video on the central screen.

Evelyn sat inside an interrogation room at police headquarters.

“If Laura refuses,” Vale said, “her mother will be charged with creating the Registry. Every crime committed through the system will belong to Elaine Harper.”

Laura looked at Mark.

He shook his head.

“Don’t do it.”

Vale opened the microphone.

“Say the phrase, Laura.”

Laura stepped forward.

“The bird returns before the final bell.”

The system accepted her voice.

Owen shouted, “What are you doing?”

The countdown disappeared.

For one second, Vale looked victorious.

Then every screen filled with the waveform from Case 418.

Laura had not merely repeated the master phrase.

She had spoken it while playing Martin Cross’s original confession through the portable recorder hidden beneath her coat.

The adult voice match unlocked the Registry.

The acoustic watermark infected every connected archive.

Thousands of false recordings were automatically flagged.

Every stolen identity appeared on the screens.

Every fabricated death certificate was released to law-enforcement watchdogs, international journalists, courts, and independent servers.

Vale’s expression collapsed.

“You cannot control where that information goes.”

“I know,” Laura said.

Alarms sounded inside the theater.

Daniel Reed locked the control panel.

“No one can erase it now.”

Vale reached inside his jacket.

Mark struck the glass emergency switch.

The transparent door opened between them.

Reeves stepped forward with his weapon raised.

“Andrew Vale, put your hands where I can see them.”

Vale slowly lifted his hands.

Then the theater speakers activated.

A cloned version of Reeves’s voice ordered the police units outside to enter and eliminate every armed suspect.

Reeves looked toward the ceiling.

“They’ll believe it came from me.”

Laura heard boots moving through the upper corridor.

Mark took her hand.

May you like

Vale smiled again.

“In thirty seconds, the police will kill all of you for me.”
