Chapter 2 - The Name Beneath Her Mother’s

The ambulance doors closed on the sound of Eleanor shouting for her attorney.
Audrey lay strapped to the stretcher while a paramedic placed an oxygen mask over her face. Another fastened monitors across her abdomen. Noah’s heartbeat filled the cramped space, rapid but steady. Diana sat near Audrey’s feet, speaking into a secure radio as the ambulance pulled away from the hotel.
“West team has the ballroom. Basement access is blocked. Hale is unaccounted for,” Diana said. “Repeat, Lucas Hale is missing.”
Audrey lifted the mask. “Why was my mother’s name in that safe?”
Diana ended the call but did not answer immediately.
“My mother died six years ago,” Audrey continued. “She never knew the Sterlings. She worked in a public library. She lived two states away.”
“Your mother knew them,” Diana said quietly. “She just never told you.”
A contraction seized Audrey before she could respond. The paramedic coached her through it, but her mind remained trapped inside the hotel safe.
Her mother, Evelyn Mercer, had been a gentle woman who hated conflict and never discussed Audrey’s father. She had always claimed he left before Audrey was born. After Evelyn died, Audrey found no letters, no photographs, nothing that explained the silence.
Until the emergency phone.
“What did she do for them?” Audrey asked.
“She was not employed by the Sterling family. She was a patient.”
Audrey stared at Diana.
The agent’s expression remained controlled, but grief moved beneath it.
“Thirty-two years ago,” Diana said, “a private fertility program operated under several names. One of them was Sterling Maternal Research. Officially, it provided experimental prenatal care to women with high-risk pregnancies. Unofficially, it collected genetic data, altered legal records, and arranged private adoptions for wealthy clients.”
“No.”
“Your mother entered that program when she was twenty-four.”
“No.”
“She left seven months later with you.”
Audrey gripped the blanket. “She gave birth to me.”
“I believe she did.”
“You believe?”
“We have incomplete records. Most were destroyed. The files in the hotel may be the first intact archive we’ve found.”
The paramedic glanced at the fetal monitor. “Her blood pressure is climbing.”
Diana leaned forward. “Audrey, focus on your breathing. We can discuss this after the baby is safe.”
But safety had become a word with no meaning.
The ambulance reached St. Catherine’s Medical Center, where a neonatal team was already waiting. Audrey was rushed through a private entrance. Julian arrived minutes later in a hotel security vehicle, arguing with federal officers who refused to let him pass.
Audrey heard him before she saw him.
“She is my wife!”
“And currently a protected witness,” an agent replied.
A doctor examined Audrey and explained that they might be able to slow labor. Noah’s heartbeat remained strong, but Audrey was dilating quickly. Steroid injections were ordered for the baby’s lungs. Nurses moved around her in efficient silence.
Diana stood outside the glass wall, receiving updates from the hotel.
Audrey watched her until the doctor finished.
“Bring her in,” Audrey said.
The nurse hesitated. “You need rest.”
“I need the truth.”
Diana entered carrying a sealed evidence bag. Inside was Audrey’s file from the hotel safe.
“We recovered this before someone triggered the basement fire system,” Diana said. “Most of the other records were damaged by water.”
Audrey’s name was typed on the tab, but below it was a code: M-17.
“What does that mean?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Diana placed a second bag beside it. Inside was Evelyn Mercer’s file.
Her code was M-16.
Consecutive numbers.
Audrey’s skin went cold.
“There’s more,” Diana said. “Your mother’s file contains a photograph of Eleanor Sterling taken in 1994. Eleanor was standing beside your mother in a clinical examination room.”
“Why?”
“We intend to ask her.”
“Where is she?”
Diana’s jaw tightened. “Gone.”
Audrey pushed herself upright. “What do you mean, gone?”
“During the power outage, someone used an underground service tunnel to remove Eleanor from the hotel. We found a discarded tracking bracelet near the river loading dock.”
“What about Julian?”
“He’s here. Seraphina is with him. Lucas Hale remains missing.”
A nurse entered, pale and urgent. “Agent Cruz, we have a problem.”
Diana turned.
“The patient’s electronic chart was just changed. Someone entered an emergency surgical authorization under her husband’s credentials.”
Audrey felt the room tilt.
“What surgery?” Diana asked.
The nurse looked at Audrey before answering.
“A cesarean delivery followed by a permanent sterilization procedure.”
Audrey’s heart monitor began to race.
“I never consented to that.”
The nurse nodded. “We know. We blocked the order.”
Diana moved to the door and spoke into her radio.
Audrey stared at the evidence bags, at the two consecutive codes, at the name of a mother who had carried secrets into her grave.
Then her emergency phone vibrated on the bedside table.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Your mother stole you from us.
May you like
The next message arrived before Audrey could breathe.
We will not let you steal the child.
