Chapter 15 - The Door That Should Never Have Opened

Nobody moved.

The silence was unbearable.

Javier looked at Elena.

“You heard that.”

Elena nodded.

Sofia turned toward her.

“Why would he tell me not to trust you?”

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Sofia's voice became colder.

“Tell me the truth.”

Elena looked at the photograph in Sofia's hand.

“I don't know what Daniel believes.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I know.”

“Then give me one.”

Elena took a slow breath.

“I knew he was alive.”

Javier stared at her.

“What?”

Elena looked at Sofia.

“I knew.”

Sofia stepped backward.

“How long?”

“Six years.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“You knew my father was alive for six years?”

“I tried to find him.”

“You found him.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Elena's eyes filled with regret.

“Because every time I got close, someone threatened you.”

Sofia shook her head.

“You don't get to decide what I can handle.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Elena's voice broke.

“Because I failed him once.”

Sofia stared.

“What happened?”

Elena looked toward the door.

“Your father asked me to protect you.”

“And?”

“I chose the company.”

Sofia said nothing.

“I thought I could fix everything later.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“By the time I understood what was happening, Daniel had disappeared.”

Sofia whispered,

“And Teresa?”

“She knew part of the truth.”

“Richard?”

“More than part.”

Javier suddenly looked toward the hallway.

“Where's my mother?”

No one answered.

Then Mariana appeared at the doorway.

She was holding a small envelope.

Her face was pale.

“I found this in Mom's room.”

Sofia took it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Daniel.

Teresa.

Elena.

And another woman.

A woman Sofia had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

The day Sofia was born.

Sofia stared at it.

“Who is she?”

Mariana shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Javier turned the photograph over.

There was another sentence.

She is the reason Daniel left.

Sofia looked at Elena.

Elena's expression changed completely.

“You weren't supposed to find that.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“Why?”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Because if you know who she is…”

She stopped.

Sofia waited.

“Then you'll finally understand why your father gave you everything.”

A sound came from outside.

Three slow knocks against the front door.

Everyone turned.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

No one moved.

Then a man's voice came through the door.

“Sofia.”

Her face went white.

She knew that voice.

Daniel.

Her father.

Alive.

Standing on the other side.

Sofia walked toward the entrance.

Elena grabbed her arm.

“Don't.”

Sofia looked at her.

“Why?”

Elena whispered,

“Because the man outside may not be the person you think he is.”

The knocking stopped.

A folded envelope slid beneath the door.

Sofia slowly bent down and picked it up.

Her name was written on the front.

She opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

If Elena tells you the truth, leave immediately.

Sofia looked back at Elena.

For the first time, Elena looked terrified.

Then every light in The Pines went out.

In the darkness, someone whispered from directly behind Sofia.

“You finally came home.”

Sofia turned.

And before she could see who was standing there, the entire house erupted in alarms.

Outside, the black SUVs disappeared into the rain.

Inside, the vault door began to open by itself.

And somewhere beneath The Pines, a second set of footsteps started climbing the stairs.

Sofia held the photograph tightly.

She now knew that the bus station had never been the beginning of the story.

It had been the trap.

The real story had started twenty years earlier.

On the night she was born.

And whoever had been waiting all these years had finally decided that Sofia was ready to learn the truth.

But there was one question no one had answered.

Why had Daniel left everything to her…

when he knew she would eventually have to choose between destroying the Alcantara family and saving the people who had destroyed hers?

The answer was waiting behind the next door.

And Sofia had no idea whether she would be brave enough to open it.
